Nicknames: Austin Boxer Rescue

Arrival Story: Meet Tarpon! Tarpon is a large flashy fawn gentleman who is about three years old. When Tarpon came into rescue, he was very underweight and thin, but has gained about fifteen pounds from love and good nutrition. He is heartworm positive, but this will be treated once he’s adopted. Tarpon’s most unique characteristic is his extremely long tongue! Due to a broken jaw earlier in life, his mouth is a bit crooked and he always sticks his tongue out at you! We think it gives him extra personality!
Tarpon adores playing with other dogs and lives with several canine foster siblings in a range of sizes. He currently lives with a cat, but is too interested to be placed in a forever home with one. Tarpon has loved the attention he has received from children he has met in public and at adoption days.
Tarpon can run very fast and likes to play chase with the other dogs. He likes to be both the chas-ee and the chaser. When he isn’t running, Tarpon enjoys lying by your feet while you watch TV. If dogs in your face aren’t your thing, Tarpon will be a perfect fit for you. He enjoys human companionship and follows his humans around to be near them, but he isn’t overly affectionate and doesn’t try to make himself into the world’s largest lap dog!
Tarpon is a well-behaved boy who is housebroken, and is perfectly crate-trained. All his foster mom has to do is point to the crate and tell him “go,” and Tarpon goes right in with no coaxing! Going for walks are his favorite activity and he gets VERY excited when he sees the leash. His leash manners are improving, but he still pulls when excited. His foster mom gives him a “B+” for his manners. She says he knows sit, down, and shake, but still has a little trouble focusing on commands when there are distractions around. Continued and consistent practice will turn this into an A+ in no time!
Tarpon is a bit of a messy eater, probably due to his tongue. But other than a slightly larger than normal mess, his tongue does not impede him in any way. He seems to have an easier time grasping his kibble if a bit of wet food, pumpkin, or yogurt is mixed in to stick it together. He recently discovered an affinity for pigs ears as well.
Two of Tarpon’s other distinguishing characteristics are the circle game he plays, and his absolute joy for car rides. The circle game consists of his human slapping hands against her thighs, which causes Tarpon to run three sprints around the yard (every time). On the third lap, he circles back to his foster mom and tries to untie her shoelaces (every time)! Tarpon loves Austin traffic, because his foster mom lets him do the dog-ride (stick his head out the window) when she’s sitting in traffic – he loves to watch the world and feel the wind against his ears.
This happy guy is looking for his forever home. Don’t let this one pass you by!

Leave a bone for Tarpon
