Arrival Story:
Pug is an absolutely gorgeous flashy fawn male who is about two years old. We don't know much about this hearthrob's background, other than whatever happened has made Pug very nervous about being left alone and abandoned once again. Unlike most skinny dogs that come to ABR, Pug is not food motivated whatsoever and will leave his food to go make sure his foster mom is still close by. This sweetheart simply wants to be loved and cherished. He is very relaxed and will play when encouraged but his favorite activity is chilling out and cuddling with people. Pug gets along well with the other dog in his foster home and has done well with other dogs he's met except for several dominant dogs that acted aggressively toward him. The only challenge he's had with the other dog in his foster home is acting possessive about getting attention from humans. This is not being tolerated and he is taking correction well. He is very good with children and does not jump up at all. He knows a number of commands such as sit, stay and down but since he isn't motivated by treats he needs an owner that understands how to be a strong pack leader and make sure Pug knows what is expected of him. Pug walks nicely on his leash and doesn't pull. He does not like going in his crate but does OK once he is in there. He is a very quiet boy and doesn't bark at all. It is clear that Pug suffers from some separation anxiety and needs an owner that will be patient and consistent in helping him feel secure. Pug is able to jump over a fence if he gets anxious so he should never ever be left in the yard when his family isn't home or forced to stay outside if he is asking to come indoors. Pug has not been tested with cats. Pug is heartworm positive and his treatment will be paid for by ABR when he is adopted. Pug will be a very easy dog to treat for heartworms because he is so relaxed and as long as he's getting plenty of attention he will be content to be calm for the six weeks of treatment. An ideal home for Pug would be in a home where people will enjoy a dog being their shadow and wanting to snuggle. He needs a lot of companionship more than a lot of activity or exercise. If you're looking for a lovebug and are willing to enforce rules and boundaries with this stubborn but snuggly boy, ask to meet Pug!
