Arrival Story:
After I adopted Ellie from a shelter in Tennessee, I started volunteering at a shelter here at home. Jack was one of the dogs that would be brought over from Columbiana each weekend to Helena, and each weekend he went back. Maybe it was because he was skinny and quiet, or maybe it was because he wasn't a puppy, but no one ever took him home. I loved playing with him on my days at the shelter, and would take him on walks and give him treats-- basically do anything with him to give him attention and get him out of his kennel. When springtime began to roll around, puppies and kittens were being dropped off at the shelter at an alarming rate. I finally got an email one day that said Jack was one of the animals that had been there the longest and, if animals had to be put down because of overcrowding, he would be one of the first to go. I called my Mom (who lives in Nashville with my brother) and cried. I loved him, but I absolutely could not have another dog. Mom and my brother talked it over (after I sent an email containing pictures of him looking pretty pitiful) and decided that they would take him in. So, my brother drove down from Nashville to take him home, Mom paid his adoption fee by check card over the phone, and I signed his adoption papers. He and Brian bonded during the drive home, and now they are best buddies.

Mom discovered he had heartworms at his first vet checkup, so he had to be treated for that. Fortunately he's a trooper, and made it through just fine. After that was taken care of, he began to put on weight finally and now he's a sturdy boy. He and Ellie play endlessly when I go to visit. We love our Jack! The pictures are one of him now with his big doggy smile, one of him at the shelter, one of him snoozing (his whole body deflates!) and one of he and Ellie playing at Christmas
