Arrival Story:
I got Kairi on a stormy night in December 2011. My grandparents decided I could have another dog (our first was and is a recalcitrant family dog), one that could be solely mine, so I wouldn't be so lonely. But after several months of searching for the "perfect" rescue dog with no luck, I wasn't really that enthused. The dog I'd had my hopes on had been adopted from under our noses after we were told she wasn't ready to leave; she was adopted the same night. I guess now I can say it was fate. My grandma talked me into looking at a litter of mini long-haired dachshunds advertised by a rural breeder. I didn't know what to expect but I tried not to get excited for fear of disappointment. It was raining and freezing that day, and we drove to this little rural town about 3 hours away to see the puppies. My grandparents assured me that if I didn't see one I liked, I didn't have to get one. The lady met us outside with who I presume was her son, holding two small female pups, as per was my personal preference. I got to hold both, but was immediately felt a pull to the first one I held; actually, I didn;t want to put her down, but I held the second just to be fair. I was waiting for a sign to let me know that I was destined to have one of the puppies, corny as it sounds. I got it when the first puppy looked me right in the eyes and put her nose to mine. I felt warm all over, and I knew from that moment who I was taking home. At first, my grandma and the breeder thought I wanted the other puppy though, and she was about to give it the booster before we took one home, but something about the puppy pulled at me, and I found myself insisting I get that one. The breeder and my grandparents were surprised; the first pup was about a pound bigger, had a darker coat "not as nice" coat, and of course, the deal-sealer, a crooked tail. But I just knew she was meant for me, and now almost a year later, I've never been more glad I listened to instinct. meeting Kairi now, I wonder how I ever lived without her, and I feel like as much as I loved and knew about dogs, I never knew the boundless love of a dog until I got Kairi. I'm so grateful for her, and I'd like to think she is too.

Dear Diary,
Hi, my name is Kairi, and I'm a little dog that likes to grab life by the horns! Ever since coming to live with my new best friend (she tells people she's too young to be a mom, but secretly, she loves the title) almost a year ago, I've had lots of wonderful experiences and adventures and made a lot of friends (with two and four legs alike)!

What can I really say since I'm new to this whole diary thing? Well, for starters, I'm a long-haired miniature dachshund, and I think I'm called a "sable". My mo--I mean, my human "sister"/best friend, spoils me rotten. I even sleep curled up with her every singe night! I drive her up the walls sometimes too, when I get into things, but she never stays mad long. People always tell me how cute I am; sometimes they even ask to take me home! I'm flattered, but I know I only have one home, and its right here.

I started out as a a little pup born in the country. Honestly, I don't really know where I'd be today if my human BFF didn't choose me. The lady who owns my real mommy and daddy wasn't very good at taking care of me...I was itchy with fleas, had ear mites, and yucky worms when my new mommy got me. Oh, and let's not forget that someone stepped on my tail when I was a baby so now it's permanently crooked. But my human mistress thinks it makes me special.

She says all the time she doesn't regret it. The whole family loves me, too, even though they didn't want another dog at first, or a girl puppy (my mommy talked them into it)! But now they spoil me to pieces even when mom's not around. Can you believe it? I also have a big brother named Joey. He's a corgi and he's 7.

It took a while for him to warm up to me, but now he doesn't mind me much, as long as I don't eat out of his doggy dish! I really look up to him though, even though he doesn't really like playing with me; I still love him! I like playing with my cat pal, Kisa, most though. She's a few months younger, and we have fun rolling around and wrestling together. We even share food and try to take each others toys (ok, so I mostly take hers).

People joke all the time about how funny we are, but really I just love to play. But my favorite hobby is cuddling! I l-o-v-e to cuddle, even more than milkbones! But don't tell my big brother that, ok? He LOVES treats more than anything. I gotta go, but I'll tell you guys more later, ok?
