Arrival Story:
We adopted Kirby in Jan, 2012. Kirby's past is sketchy at best. What we can gather from vet records, rescue groups and foster parents is that Kirby nee Daisy nee Bella was bred in Delaware and purchased by a couple/family in Pennsylvania. The foster parent thought she was kept in an indoor kennel 24 hours a day for the first year of her life. (tangent: I don't know what people think when they get a dog!?! They see a cute puppy, take it home, ignore it and it turns into an unruly 100+ lb dog that they can't and don't want to handle...and they wonder why. Duh!) We also think someone hit her or her cage with a rake because she cowers when we take out gardening tools. She was rescued and put into a foster home that self-fed (and did not exercise her). Well, Kirby -the bottomless garbage can- ate and ate and ate until she ballooned to 125+ lbs. Kirby was moved to a second foster family who did wonders for her. She lost the weight, walked every day and played with their other 2 dogs in a big yard. They were very loving to her and very knowledgeable about hounds, but did not have the room to keep Kirby. We found Kirby on Petfinder.com and drove 4 hours to Harrisburg, PA to meet Kirby and take her home FOREVER. Kirby DOES miss her best beagle friend, Lilly, but she has otherwise settled in nicely to two long walks a day, snoozing on the sofa, swimming in the lake and trying to figure out a working relationship with the cat. She is 100 lbs of pure love. We hope she feels like she died and went to heaven. We are just totally in love with this gentle soul.
