Arrival Story:
For G'Kar's full story visit www.mizzjesse.com/html/gkar.htm. G'Kar was rescued by a Eureka, CA pet groomer who could no longer stand what she saw each day on her way to and from work: A small puppy -- G'Kar -- chained in a front yard without shelter, attention, or adequate food and water. She mustered her courage and knocked on the door of the house where the puppy was chained and demanded the owner give her the dog, else she'd report the neglect to local authorities. The puppy's owner didn't much care about it one way or the other. He told the groomer to take the dog. Soon the groomer found a home for the puppy she'd named G'Kar (after the noble Babylon 5 character, "Ambassador G'Kar"). G'Kar's new guardian was a young man named Todd and, for the next year and a half, the two were inseparable best friends. But at the age of two, G'Kar's guardian Todd died unexpectedly and soon G'Kar was sent to live with Todd's sister, Ananda. G'Kar spent the rest of her life with Ananda, her new best--and forever--friend.

In November of 2002, we took G'Kar (http://mizzjesse.com/html/gkar.ht m) to the vet for some relatively minor hip displasia/arthritis. The vet prescribed Rimadyl: "Give it to her an hour before you take her on a hike to help her with post-hike stiffness." She advised that, in some dogs, over time, with long exposure to Rimadyl, some liver damage might occur. We didn't question the vet, nor do any follow up research...just trusted that she knew what she was talking about. We also had a blood panel performed that same day on G'Kar -- her panel was perfectly normal in every respect, including her liver enzymes. Over the next three to four months we sporadically gave G'Kar the recommended dosage of Rimadyl before taking her on our easy hikes. Though we didn't even finish the prescription (we'd used less than 30 of the 60-pill bottle), G'Kar became deperately ill and we rushed her to the vet. Her blood work showed she had moderate to severe liver damage. Subsequent tests showed she had a severely enlarged liver, lesions on her spleen and a mass in her chest which later proved to be invasive thymoma. The only realistic therapy for G'Kar for her thymoma was chemo, which the vet pushed in spite of the body of evidence which suggested invasive thymoma did not respond to chemo. Upon the vet's urging we agreed to chemo. In the end, and as we suspected, the chemo did nothing for G'Kar's cancer. With the assistance of Dr. Carolyn Araiza, G'Kar found release from her suffering on December 19, 2003, while at home resting in our bed, our arms around her. We had her cremated and her ashes now rest on our fireplace mantle. One year later, our senior rescue dog, Jesse, would join her there. We miss you, Pookie, but we know you are in a kinder, gentler place, a place free of pain and suffering and devoid of disease ... a place where you are again and forever in the embrace of your lost friend and companion, Todd. Peace and be well, both of you.
