Arrival Story:
For Jesse's full story, visit www.mizzjesse.com Our beloved G'Kar passed away from cancer (thanks to Pfizer's Rimadyl) just before Christmas 2003. Though grief-stricken, two days later we found ourselves looking at photos of adoptable dogs on the Humane Society Silicon Valley's website (www.hssv.org). One dog had a great smile: 11 y.o. Jesse, who'd been surrendered by her family of 11 years--the only family she'd ever known. They were moving and couldn't, or wouldn't, take her with them. Jesse had no lower teeth and her muzzle was snowy white -- not the kind of dog people are looking to adopt. After six weeks of languishing in a cold, cement cage, kennel #6, Jesse was without a hope, in spite of the two newspaper ads the HSSV had run featuring Jesse as "Pet of the Week." But, alas, not one inquiry resulted, not one speck of interest in poor old Jesse. When we saw Jesse on the website, we felt guided by G'Kar's memory to rescue a senior dog. Jesse's photo and sad story so tugged at our hearts that the very next day we brought Jesse home with us. We had learned from the HSSV's records of Jesse's surrender that she'd been a "backyard dog"...tied up in a backyard for all of her 11 years and, from what we could glean from her personality, she'd not been given much affection or attention during those years. We began introducing Jesse to the world: Long walks in the woods, along the river, in the city. Jesse was like a puppy--timid and scared at first, but eager to venture and explore. To see Jesse bloom into a confident, affectionate and playful dog was such a gratifying reward--that was her precious gift to us.

Bio:
In December 2004, we found out Jesse had an inoperable hemangiosarcoma of the spleen. The vet told us there was nothing to be done, but to make the most of what little time we had left with Jesse. The vet also explained that Jesse's spleen would soon rupture, and she would most likely suffer a massive internal hemorrhage. It wouldn't be painful, we were told, but that Jesse would grow suddenly weak and her gums would be pale white... Just one week later, Jesse and I went out to her backyard to fill the birdfeeder, as was our usual routine. As Jesse walked alongside me, she suddenly stopped, hunched her back up as if from a pain in her abdomen, and then threw up. She had difficulty walking, her legs trembled as if weak and exhausted. I knew from the vet's prescient words of one week earlier that her spleen had ruptured. Jesse was in crisis. With her last remaining strength, I helped Jesse back inside the house where she collapsed onto her bed. We made the dreaded phone call and, 20 minutes later, the vet arrived. The same vet who, just one year earlier, had caringly released G
