A Christmas Story

Long ago in the deepest of winters all of the animals on earth were abuzz with the news.

"He is BORN! HE IS BORN!" Cried the snowy owl.

"Come one and all rejoice!" Roared the mighty lion.

"Bring gifts to the new King!" The deer hurried.

The forest grew bright with the din of excitement. Every creature was running towards the star. The noise was so loud and joyful that it traveled distant lands.

In a quiet glen, under a bramble bush, a small lonely dog raised his head from his slumber and heard the sounds from afar. He raised his little head and wondered. Slowly he raised his tired body and sniffed the air. He knew something was amiss - but he knew not what.

A voice ever so sweet was singing in the distance, this he could hear. The words were not at all clear, but the sound was of waterfalls, and misty mornings and everything dear...Eagerly he followed the sound and soon saw a star. It shone so brightly his little eyes watered. What was this shiny thing that happily glowed? What could be happening that would bring about such a lovely sight?

His little legs beat the path for many days. He became tired and hungry but still he walked on. He had to follow the sound of that voice. The voice that reminded him of warmer and kinder times. He had to follow the light of the star. The star told him of happy things to come.

At last he came into a clearing and his eyes beheld a mystifying sight. Animals were everywhere, and each had a precious gift. Some brought shiny berries from the forest, some brought beautiful leaves, some brought twigs from the rarest of trees and even some brought the most precious wildflowers of the field. They were laying these gifts at the entrance of a stable. Above the stable the light of the star twinkled more brightly than before.

He turned to the deer and asked: "What is all this? Where have I come?"

"You have come to see the new King. He is Born. Where are your gifts for the child?" asked the deer reproachfully.

"I have no gifts...I didn't know..." said the lonely little dog with his head hung low.

The deer sneered and snubbed and quickly walked away as he tossed his head indignantly.

The little dog's body trembled all over, his little tail flew between his little legs, and his little head hung lower than ever. He was ashamed. And yet...he still he wanted to get a little peek at the New King.

Quietly, ever so carefully, he creeped over to the stable. He was so small he could easily hide under the other animals. Ever so sleekly he crept up to the manger and peeked inside.

"WHO ARE YOU!" Boomed the voice of the Lion. "WHY DO YOU DARE NOT BRING GIFTS FOR THE NEW KING?!!!" and the little dog cowered, much humbled...he laid his little head at the foot of the manger and hid his eyes. He was ready to be killed by the Lion, and yet he spoke ever so quietly, ever so meekly, ever so bravely: "I have no gifts, I have no berries, or twigs, or bright flowers of the field...all I have is my life and I will gladly give that, for I have shamed all my brethren tonight..."

He waited - with his eyes closed, thinking that if he did die tonight, at least he would die beneath the cradle of his King. That's when a warm and gentle hand was upon him.

He did not dare to open his eyes, until he heard a woman's voice speak: "Do not fear little one. You are safe here. This bramble in your fur speaks of the gift you have brought to him."

The lonely little dog opened his eyes and looked up at the woman.

"But I have no gift to offer, save for myself, and that is very little..." he shyly protested.

The woman smiled and scratched his ears. "Little dog, you traveled far to see the King...that is gift enough when it comes from your heart. What gift is more precious than one given in innocence and humility? No - little one, you are welcome here." as she spoke she raised the little dog up.

"Behold, your King, the Son of Man. You shall serve him well."

and the baby smiled...

So it came to pass and dog was lonely no more...

And dog has served man ever since, loyal to a fault, and humble he remains. A gift from God to us, for who, but dog will travel miles without explanation? Who, but dog will cower from you even if he is not wrong? Who, but dog will take a scolding even when he is not to blame? Who, but dog is content to die at our feet if he so must?

Let us care for him well.

I thought I saw a wolf

Momma and I were out walking last night. We were just down the half mile road by our place and mom decided to turn around and head back home. This is the usual walk we have every evening.

Last night we turn around and mom shines her flashlight and sees two dog type creatures slinking down the road towards us. Out of the corner of her eye she sees two more dog type creatures in the field beside us. Now I wanted to go after them, but momma thought it wasn't a good idea and kept a firm grip on me. She shone the flashlight on them and started yelling at them and the two coming towards us started to very slowly retreat. Then the flashlight goes dead!

Mom stands up as straight as she can and keeps a firm grip on me, she is yelling a loud voice and walking slowly towards to the dog type creatures. Eventually they move into the field and mom continues walking slow and shouting loud as we get to our driveway and start for home. Mom thought if she ran, they would definitely come after us.

She thought at first they were coyotes, but there have been reports of wolves and wolf/coyote hybrids in our area and she is now thinking it was the latter as they appeared quite big.

We won't be walking that far at night by ourselves again!

My New Friend

I have a new friend and I think he is awesome. The momma does not think this new pal is awesome at all!

Yesterday mom and I took a drive to our neighbor's. Our awesome neighbor passed away on Monday and mom made a big pot of soup and some bread for the family and we took this over to them. When we returned home, she opened the truck door and off I went running. I raced immediately over the riverbank. Mom got my leash and came after me and was calling and calling. She was calling for about 30 minutes before she finally saw me.

She saw me playing with a coyote. She told him to get off her property and told me to come. The coyote slunk away and I wanted to follow, but the way mom yelled at me made me go to her. She snaps on my leash and takes me home. As we were walking along the edge of the riverbank on our way home, we looked down and there was my friend! I gave him the playbow and barked, and mom said "NO" firmly and tugged on my leash.

Oh, I nearly forgot. Last week daddy comes home with a big box just for me! Inside the big box are lots of raw deer bones. So far I have only had one, but I hope maybe this weekend they will let me have another one. If you pups haven't tried deer bones, you really should. They are wonderful! Hmm, maybe we should have a party at my house!

We have also been in the deep freeze up here of late. Yet again this morning it is -41 with the windchill. Even my feet are getting cold in this weather and mom is making me wear my winter snowsuit when we go out.

Stay warm pals!

All I can say is wow! I am a Diary of the Day pick again today!

Thank you so much Dogster for this honor!

Well, not much has happened since my last diary entry.

Not much except that my Saskatchewan Roughriders ran right over top of the Hamilton Tigercats and won the Grey Cup! Yeah, Riders!!!!! That is only the 4th time in the 100 years of the Roughrider organization that we have won the top prize. Even better was that the game was a blow out! Yes, my Riders beat the Ticats by a score of 45-23. Mom could feel sorry for the Ticats losing, but she doesn't! Ha, ha!

I have been supervising mom baking the last few days. So far shortbread cookies, a double chocolate peanut butter brownie and some butter tarts have been made. Mom was even nice and made a batch of doggie cookies for me.

I would like to wish all my American friends a very happy and safe Thanksgiving! Safe travels to all those venturing out on this holiday.

Thank you again!

Thank you again Dogster for the honor of once again being DDP today! Wow, this is a great day. Not only am I a DDP, but we are sure the Riders will win today.

I know, I know, you are wondering who the Riders are! The Riders are the Saskatchewan Roughriders who are playing the Hamilton Tigercats for the Grey Cup up here in Canada today. The Grey Cup is the equivalent of your Super Bowl! The peeps are making lots of finger food, and I know I will get some.

Well we must go prepare for the game now and cheer on our Riders!

I am gonna be quasi famous pups!

Mom sent a copy of my profile picture to Global Saskatoon yesterday and she just heard that they will be using it on their 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. newscast and it will be the cover photo on their Facebook page tomorrow.

I think this means I should get extra treats. Don't you pups agree with me?!

I'm Just Fluffy!

Mom took me to the vet yesterday. She said I needed to have my Bordetella vaccine brought up today. Ok, mom, whatever you say. I just love going to the vet and I got hugs and kisses from everywhere. Even one of the technicians from the back came running out to give me a hug and a kiss.

While there I got weighed. I am 35.5 kilos or 78 pounds. Mom was told this was too much for me to weigh. They said, we probably can't feel his spine with this much weight on him! Haha, but they could feel my spine so there. Then they said we should be able to easily feel his ribs and we might not be able to. Haha, but again, they could feel my ribs. Mom said maybe it was just my winter coat that is adding on the pounds. They didn't buy that theory. But they stopped saying I was overweight when they could feel my spine and ribs and everyone mentioned how muscular I am. Of course mom pipes up and says that muscle weighs more than fat. Yup, mom is on my side!

Mom got asked how much she feeds me and she told them 2 cups per day and they agreed that was good. Then mom asks if poop has any calories! BOL! Yes, pups, it is a veritable smorgasbord outside my door everyday and I like to sample everything. Deer, rabbit, goose poop are all tasty. Oh and lately the neighbor has brought his cows home from the summer pasture. Pups, cow poop is awesome! Can't forget that the other neighbor has moved his horses into the back 40 and I now have access to horse poop. So just how many calories do you think my treats might have?

My river is freezing over and yesterday the ferry ceased to run for the year. Now we must wait for the river to be frozen over sufficiently before we can drive across the river on the ice road.

Well, I think I will ask mom to take me outside so I can scrounge up some more delectable specimens. Later pups!

Thank you!!

Even more snow

We are getting even more snow. We don't have as much as we did last year at this time, and mom is happy about that, but we are getting more snow. When mom and I are outside these days, we are seeing lots of geese in the fields and they sure make a lot of noise and are they ever messy. Rolling in geese poop is fun. Mom says I should cut down on that activity!

Lately we have been seeing a Bald Eagle around our place and mom is trying to get a picture of it. It is such a majestic thing to see this bird take flight.

In other news, daddy and I got mom a cooking class for her birthday and she was supposed to have her class a few days ago. Unfortunately the class had to be cancelled at the last minute due to the chef, who was to teach the class, having food poisoning. The class is rescheduled for next week. To compensate for the last minute cancellation, everyone got a free cocktail.

Have a great weekend everyone!
