Arrival Story:
One stormy night in October, my husband & I were leaving our niece's 18th birthday party. Their home is in the country, on a dirt road just off of a busy highway. As we came up to the highway, a small dog darted across the road in front of us, only about 30 feet from the dark highway. I'm not sure if my husband stopped the truck before or after I jumped out, but out I went. _____________________________ The dog ran away at first, but was definitely interested in us, so we kept trying to coax her toward us and away from the busy highway. The storm was just getting bad, but I wasn't going to leave her out there at midnight in the middle of it, so I slowly inched forward, retreating each time she ran away. After about 10 minutes in the rain, I turned and walked back toward the truck and she followed! She got close enough that I was able to gently kneel down, get her to approach me and scoop her up. Once in the truck we wrapped her up in the hubster's hoodie. She immediately licked both our noses and settled down as if she knew we could be trusted. ________________________ We took her to the local ER Vet and had her scanned...no chip. She was covered in fleas and ticks, completely and looked like she hadn't eaten in weeks. She was completely emaciated. We took her home, gave her a good meal, treated her with Frontline and made a space for her in the garage, intending on finding her a home._____________________________ ____ I couldn't stand the idea of taking her to our local shelter even though I know them there (due to my work volunteering) but I knew we couldn't keep her what with 7 dogs of our own. I was able to talk our amazing vet into listing her as part of her rescue, doing all her medical work, spaying her, etc. The only catch was that we had to foster her. OK, so we have a 3 time history of foster failure but THIS TIME, we just knew we could do it. Yeah, well...___________________________ ___ We had very good intentions and did meet with some potential adopters but as loving as Chloe is, no one really seemed to click with her. Everyone loves her and she's adapted to nearly every person we've introduced her to. My sister who is virtually anti-dog actually fell IN LOVE with her and wanted her, so we toyed with that idea for awhile but were waiting for her to get settled in after moving before making it official._________________________ _______ By this time Chloe had been with us nearly six months. She'd settled in well with our other dogs, was getting used to our household and routines, was doing fairly well in obedience class and we were getting used to the idea of her being part of our extended family. Then we got a call...someone else wanted to meet her. She'd met other adopters before and I was ok with it, but this time it was like a dagger in the heart. I knew then that she'd been with us too long, we'd fallen for her and weren't going to be able to give her up. Our vet knew this and agreed to let us pay Chloe's adoption fee and keep her. We officially adopted her on April 12th.
