DAY 630, Thursday, 11/28/13 [Thanksgiving]

A few days ago, one of my pals sent me this little story. I saved it for today because I thought it was so appropriate for Thanksgiving. [Author unknown]

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try to live.

He said,"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life, like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Tomorrow is an extra special day. Not only is it Thanksgiving, but it is also Tony’s birthday. Wherever you are, Tony, I love you and I miss you very, very much. You are the one who found me online and rescued me and brought me home. I will never forget you, Tony. Woof, woof!

I TOLD Bob there were little demons underground here, but he didn’t believe me. He figured that if he couldn’t see them, I must be imagining them. Well, I couldn’t see them either, but I could hear them moving around down there. So, today I showed him. I dive-bombed into the ground and came up with a ground mole. See, I guess that will teach Bob not to doubt my trusty nose anymore.

Today is Bob’s birthday, so guess what I got him for a birthday present. Snow! Yep, it snowed tonight. I thought that would be a great birthday present because it makes me happy, and when I’m happy, Bob’s happy.

It rained again all day, but we finally made it to Pennsylvania. The house is very nice, and the yard is very big…lots of room for me to run around. And you wanna hear the best news of all? They say we may get some snow this weekend. Yippee!

It rained all the way from St. Louis to Columbus, Ohio, but we finally made it. Bob looks really tired, but we have only about four hours to go now.

We were aiming for Sullivan, MO, and we actually got past there tonight—all the way to St. Louis. I’m shocked! Now don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t have faith in Bob’s ability to plan effectively. Well, actually, that’s exactly what it is.

Believe it or not, Bob was right. We actually did make it to Oklahoma City with time to spare. We’re aiming for Sullivan, MO, tomorrow, but I’ll be surprised if we get that far. We’ll see.

Well, we finally got on the way today, a day later than scheduled, but maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe we’ll miss those storms in the middle of the country. We made it to Tucumcari, NM. Bob says we’ll be in Oklahoma City tomorrow, we’ll see.

I got into a little sneezing fit this morning, and Bob said, “Gesundheit!” He thought I wouldn’t know what that meant, but I’m half German. Of course I understood.
