DAY 328, Tuesday, 1/29/13

Today Bob took me to PetSmart for a 15-minute brushing and also to get my teeth brushed. While I was busy getting beautified, he went to grab a bite to eat. When came back to pick me up, he and the groomer got quite a shock. I actually jumped over the counter. Bob thought it was because I was so excited to see him, but it was really because I saw that he had bought me a new chew toy.

You may recall that a few months ago Tony bought me a stuffed raccoon, and I got very sick because I ended up chewing off the tail and swallowing it. Well, he suggested that Bob get me a stuffed hedgehog because it had no tail for me to chew off. I loved it and carried it with me to the car. However, once we got settled in the apartment, it took me less than 10 minutes to tear it apart and start chewing on the stuffing. Naturally, Bob took it away from me and threw it in the trash. I tried to dig it out of the trash, but Bob stopped me. Pooh!

Guess what I encountered when I went out for my first walk this morning. SNOW! Yeah, and it continued snowing off and on all day. We’re supposed to have 5-8 inches by tomorrow. I wish it were 58 inches, but I’ll take what I can get. I just love playing in it. It’s so much fun.

I just realized that my Web page has been viewed more than 2,000 times. I’m thrilled. Of course, Bob likes to point out that one of his songs has been viewed more than 3,000 times, and one of his short stories has been viewed more than 10,000 times, but I don’t go around intimidating people into viewing my Web page the way he does.

Boy, what a day! Bob and I took Tony’s car to the shop in Prescott today. While we waited in the lounge for the mechanics to fix the car, lots of people came by to say hello to me. Most of them wanted to pet me, but Bob wouldn’t let them because I was on duty as his service dog. Then, we stopped at Costco to do some shopping before coming home, and again, everybody wanted to pet me, and again, Bob wouldn’t let them. I enjoyed getting out, and I appreciate the opportunity to help Bob, but I do wish that I could get petted more. I just never get enough attention.

Bob fancies himself a bit of a poet, but I think I out-did him today. What do you think?

I think that I
shall never pee
upon a poem
lovely as a tree.

The vet told Bob this week that she doesn’t think I’ll ever outgrow my puppy-like personality—no matter how old I get. She says it’s not a stage; it’s just my personality. I agree.

The temperature has been getting up to the mid forties this week. I hate it. You see, with the temperature above freezing, the snow has begun to melt. Then, when it drops down below freezing at night, the runoff re-freezes as ice on the walkways. So, when I go out in the mornings, I slip and slide all over the place. I look like Bob trying to do the gangnam style. I’ll be glad when it snows again.

I went to the vet today for my annual shots. It pinched a bit, but I took it like a man…I mean, like a dog. I really like Dr. Romans. She takes the time to make me comfortable. She gets down on the floor and rubs my belly and plays with me. She’s cool. She even said that if Tony and Bob ever decided to get rid of me, she’d be glad to take me, but I could never let that happen; Tony and Bob would be helpless without me.

Bob asked the doc about my refusing to take my Trifexis pill. She suggested coating the pill with peanut butter. The crunchy type works better, she said, because I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the crunchy stuff in the peanut butter and the pill. Oh, ye of little faith. Bob bought the peanut butter and coated the pill with it, but I still managed to separate the peanut butter from the pill.

Tony came up with the bright idea of chopping up the medicine and mixing it in with some canned dog food. Well, that did the trick. I always said that Tony is smarter than Bob. Either that, or I’ve just trained him better.

Bob got a call this week to go to Boston for a week next month, but he turned it down. He said he had a schedule conflict, but I know that he really turned it down because he couldn’t bear the thought of being away from me for a whole week. I would have managed just fine without him, but he would have been a total wreck without me.

Today is the day I was supposed to take my monthly flea pill, but I outsmarted Tony and Bob. They tried to stuff it down my throat, but I kept spitting it out. Then, Bob tried bribing me with a lamb-and-rice treat, but I managed to get all the treats without swallowing that grotesque horse pill. I have a routine appointment with the vet on Monday, and Bob said he would just take the pill with us and let the vet try to get me to take the pill. We’ll see.
