DAY 315, Wednesday, 1/16/13

I have a new bed. Oh, I still have the old one, but now I have two. You see, I’ve always slept in the living room by the window (and, of course, on the couch when nobody’s looking). Tony and Bob sleep upstairs, and I’ve always just left them alone—except when it came time to wake Bob up. Recently, though, I’ve been waking them up in the middle of the night—for some reason that they can’t figure out. So, Tony came up with the bright idea of putting a second doggie bed in the spare bedroom for me. I slept there the first night and didn’t bother them. Time will tell whether or not that plan continues to work. Stay tuned.

Some of my readers have been wondering where I’ve been the past two days. I’m fine; I’ve just been giving Bob a break to let his typing fingers thaw out. You see, over the weekend, it was -7⁰ one day and -6⁰ the next. The next day it only got down to about 5⁰ above, but the wind chill factor was -7⁰ again. Of course, none of this bothered me, but I’m not nearly as delicate as Bob is.

Kathryn, one of my faithful readers, wants to know “if it is true that dogs can sense an oncoming earthquake before humans feel it. When I lived in Mexico City, where there are frequent quakes,” she explains, “the neighborhood dogs always began barking frantically before the quake became severe. Do you think your own feet are sensitive to earth tremors?”

Well, Kathryn, many creatures are sensitive to changes in nature in various ways. We Canines can indeed detect earthquakes before humans do, but it is not because our feet are more sensitive; it is because our sense of smell is more acute. You see, when tectonic plates begin to shift, the inner earth releases gases that rise to the surface. The most prominent of these is radon. To humans, radon is odorless and colorless, but we Canines (and many other creatures) can detect it long before the quake actually reaches the surface—just one more bit of evidence that we Canines are superior to humans.

About a month ago, Bob and Tony bought a hand-held vacuum specifically designed for pet hair, and it’s been getting quite a workout. Bob uses it about four times a day just to clean up the couch. I’m doing my part, though. I figured the least I could do is help them get their money’s worth.

Remember how I went to PetSmart yesterday. Well, naturally, evvvvv’rybody there wanted to pet me. Sometimes, it’s hard being gorgeous, but I know how much it means to people to get to pet me, so I bear with it. That’s just the kind of guy I am.

For the past couple of months, Bob hasn’t been brushing me like he should. He says it’s just too cold outside. (Frankly, I think he’s just gotten too old…or too lazy.) Anyway, today he took me to PetSmart for a 15-minute brushing. When the groomer was done, the floor was covered in white fur. It looked like a snow storm had swept through the place. Oh, and speaking of snow, we’re supposed to get another 2-5 inches tonight. I can’t wait to go out in the morning and play in it.

I’ve never quite understood what Bob and Tony were talking about when they have complained about getting older—-until now. Recently, however, I’ve noticed that as I am getting older, my beautiful big shiny black nose has turned pink…to the point that it now looks a lot like Tony’s. On the positive side, at least I’ll never be as old as Bob and Tony.

Shucks! I just found out that we missed the annual dog sled races at Mormon Lake this past weekend. I would love to have gone to see some of my cousins compete. Oh, well, maybe next year.

Whoopie! I got to play in the snow drifts again today. I ran back and forth, around and around, back and forth, around and around, and…. And I didn’t even pull Bob down with me this time. I hope it snows again soon because the snow that remains on the ground won’t last too much longer.

We watched a movie today, Disney’s “Bolt.” It was a cartoon featuring a dog that looked a little bit like me. Of course, he wasn’t quite as handsome as I am, but he was kinda cute anyway. I don’t know why I couldn’t be a big Hollywood superstar.
