DAY 616, Thursday, 11/14/13

Wow! This place looks like a tornado hit it—clothes and stuff strewn everywhere. I don’t know if Bob will ever get everything packed in time for our move. He says, “Well, if you didn’t bug me every five minutes to go out, maybe I could get everything done.” My response: “Well, if you hadn’t kept putting it off, maybe you wouldn’t have to rush at the last minute.” Besides, he goes to the bathroom a lot more often than I do, so there!

Bob laughs at me because even though I have plenty of nice toys, I prefer to play with the sticks I find on the ground. He says it reminds him of little kids who get expensive toys for Christmas and end up spending more time playing with the boxes they came in.

Well, we have just one more week before we move back East. I’m beginning to wonder if we’re running away to join the circus. Ya see, Bob has been practicing his acrobatics again. We were playing out front today in the little “valley” in front of the apartment complex. I took a flying leap, and Bob, who was standing on the slope, did a flip in the air. Unfortunately, he landed on his derriere instead of his feet. I don’t know if he’ll pass the auditions to be an acrobat, but maybe he can get a job as a clown.

Bob and I were all set to begin our move to Pennsylvania this week, but Bob has been having such terrible problems with allergies that I convinced him to postpone the move a couple of weeks. His head is so congested that he can’t even think straight. After all, once we hit the road, he’ll be carrying very precious cargo.

Well, I guess you’ve been wondering what happened to me. Actually, Bob and I decided to take a little vacation. Yep. He went to San Francisco to sew a few wild oaks…or some such silly thing…and I went to visit my friendly vet, Dr. LeAnn Romans. No, I didn’t stay at the clinic; I stayed in her home with her family, including her four dogs. I had the grandest time playing with them. It was more fun than I’ve had in ages.

I slept with Dr. Romans for two nights, with one of her sons for two nights, and with her other son for one night.

Bob sent the doc a text this morning to let her know that he would be picking me up soon, and she replied, “I’m in no hurry to give him back.” Of course, when Bob came to get me, I was very excited. I know how much he needs me. Bob tried to pay Dr. Romans for keeping me, but she refused to take the money. She said that having me was such a treat. She said that when she keeps a dog for someone, she expects the dog to manifest some stress for a day or two but that I never did; I just walked right in and acted like I had always been there. I figured out how to use the doggie door on the first try. She said that I was absolutely perfect (except for the fact that I shed a lot).

Guess what we got today. Snow! Yeah, we actually got quite a bit, but very little of it actually stuck to the ground, unfortunately. I can’t wait until we get 50 feet of snow for me to run around and play in. That would be so cool!

When Bob and I go for our walks, he always wants to head for the grassy area around the corner. He can’t understand why I want to go to the ditch with the overgrown brush. I’ll bet you understand, though, don’t you? Of course, that where the crickets are! Ya know, life’s little treasures aren’t always found in the greenest of pastures.

Bob says we may be moving to Pennsylvania. No decision yet, but a buddy of ours has invited us to stay at his place, so Bob says we’re considering it. I’m not sure where Pennsylvania is, but Bob says they have snow there…and crickets too…so I guess it’ll be OK.

After a year and a half, I think I’m finally getting Bob trained. When we go for walks now, if I want to go in one direction and he wants to go the other way, I just stop in my tracks, stare at him for a few seconds until he lets up on the leash, and look in the direction where I want to go. Most of the time, he figures it out, and we go where I want to go. He does have a stubborn streak that comes out once in a while, but most of the time I win, which is the way it should be, right?

Bob says that one of the challenges of being out of work is maintaining a sense of purpose in life. I don’t get it. The purpose of life is to recognize that no matter how many crickets you manage to catch, you should always share a few with your friends; enjoy the snow while it lasts and remember that no matter how deep it gets, it always melts sooner or later; and never stop wagging your tail. What more do you need to know?
