DAY 310, Saturday, 1/12/13

About a month ago, Bob and Tony bought a hand-held vacuum specifically designed for pet hair, and it’s been getting quite a workout. Bob uses it about four times a day just to clean up the couch. I’m doing my part, though. I figured the least I could do is help them get their money’s worth.

Kathryn, one of my faithful readers, wants to know “if it is true that dogs can sense an oncoming earthquake before humans feel it. When I lived in Mexico City, where there are frequent quakes,” she explains, “the neighborhood dogs always began barking frantically before the quake became severe. Do you think your own feet are sensitive to earth tremors?”

Well, Kathryn, many creatures are sensitive to changes in nature in various ways. We Canines can indeed detect earthquakes before humans do, but it is not because our feet are more sensitive; it is because our sense of smell is more acute. You see, when tectonic plates begin to shift, the inner earth releases gases that rise to the surface. The most prominent of these is radon. To humans, radon is odorless and colorless, but we Canines (and many other creatures) can detect it long before the quake actually reaches the surface—just one more bit of evidence that we Canines are superior to humans.

Some of my readers have been wondering where I’ve been the past two days. I’m fine; I’ve just been giving Bob a break to let his typing fingers thaw out. You see, over the weekend, it was -7⁰ one day and -6⁰ the next. The next day it only got down to about 5⁰ above, but the wind chill factor was -7⁰ again. Of course, none of this bothered me, but I’m not nearly as delicate as Bob is.

I have a new bed. Oh, I still have the old one, but now I have two. You see, I’ve always slept in the living room by the window (and, of course, on the couch when nobody’s looking). Tony and Bob sleep upstairs, and I’ve always just left them alone—except when it came time to wake Bob up. Recently, though, I’ve been waking them up in the middle of the night—for some reason that they can’t figure out. So, Tony came up with the bright idea of putting a second doggie bed in the spare bedroom for me. I slept there the first night and didn’t bother them. Time will tell whether or not that plan continues to work. Stay tuned.

I’ve been doing some figuring, and I’ve concluded that I’ve not been getting enough treats lately. I think maybe it’s time for me to take Bob back to obedience training.

I’m really looking forward to Monday ‘cuz it’s a very special day. It’s Inauguration Day. You know what that means? Yep, that’s the day when Bo gets sworn in for his second full term as Canine in Chief. I’m so proud!

Today is the day I was supposed to take my monthly flea pill, but I outsmarted Tony and Bob. They tried to stuff it down my throat, but I kept spitting it out. Then, Bob tried bribing me with a lamb-and-rice treat, but I managed to get all the treats without swallowing that grotesque horse pill. I have a routine appointment with the vet on Monday, and Bob said he would just take the pill with us and let the vet try to get me to take the pill. We’ll see.

Bob got a call this week to go to Boston for a week next month, but he turned it down. He said he had a schedule conflict, but I know that he really turned it down because he couldn’t bear the thought of being away from me for a whole week. I would have managed just fine without him, but he would have been a total wreck without me.

I went to the vet today for my annual shots. It pinched a bit, but I took it like a man…I mean, like a dog. I really like Dr. Romans. She takes the time to make me comfortable. She gets down on the floor and rubs my belly and plays with me. She’s cool. She even said that if Tony and Bob ever decided to get rid of me, she’d be glad to take me, but I could never let that happen; Tony and Bob would be helpless without me.

Bob asked the doc about my refusing to take my Trifexis pill. She suggested coating the pill with peanut butter. The crunchy type works better, she said, because I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the crunchy stuff in the peanut butter and the pill. Oh, ye of little faith. Bob bought the peanut butter and coated the pill with it, but I still managed to separate the peanut butter from the pill.

Tony came up with the bright idea of chopping up the medicine and mixing it in with some canned dog food. Well, that did the trick. I always said that Tony is smarter than Bob. Either that, or I’ve just trained him better.

The temperature has been getting up to the mid forties this week. I hate it. You see, with the temperature above freezing, the snow has begun to melt. Then, when it drops down below freezing at night, the runoff re-freezes as ice on the walkways. So, when I go out in the mornings, I slip and slide all over the place. I look like Bob trying to do the gangnam style. I’ll be glad when it snows again.
