Being the smartest one in the house, treats, bunny holes, snuggling, being in the kitchen with Mommy, vegetables, getting her stump of a tail scratched, belly rubs, FIREFLIES!, riding in the car, outsmarting (and ratting on) our Beagle
Squirrels, cats, loud noises, bicycles, being unable to scratch all her spots on her own, strangers
Her stuffed dog Skip
Whatever isn't nailed down, but especially peanut butter, cheese and just about any cooked veggies.
Finding snippets of paper to trade for biscuits. Sitting up on her hind leg, jumping, not letting Mommy know that she can jump on the couch on her own - things a dog with only 1 back leg shouldn't be able to do
After we determined that our first dog, Lucy, was probably at least part Rattie, I wanted to adopt another one. I found Ginger on ratbonerescues. I'd always wanted a 3-legged dog, and there she was!
Unfortunately, this was the fall of 2001. She was in Canada. No rescue drivers wanted to go in or out of the country then, so Ginger got to fly down from Toronto on Air Canada!
She lost her leg due to "necrosis of the femoral head" which is, basically, the death of top of the leg bone. However, when kids in the neighborhood ask, I love to shrug and tell them that her leg "just fell off, 'bout half a block back", just to watch their reactions.
When I received her from rescue, she came with a folder of background information on her which included everything from her breeder's name to the name of the pet store where she was purchased. It also contained information on her "First Mom", Dorothy. I contacted Dorothy to let her know that Ginger had been adopted, was doing fine and was well-loved. We're in contact frequently so I can keep her updated on Ginger's hijinx.
EPILOGUE: GINGER PASSED AWAY FROM METASTASIZED LIVER CANCER IN MARCH OF 2009. "THE BEST DOG EVER" WILL OWN MY HEART FOREVER, AND SHE WILL FOREVER BE MISSED.
