Arrival Story: On January 19th, 2012 I received a call from the Animal Control officer at Blackfoot Impound. A litter of 5 1-hour old puppies had been dropped off along with momma. The mother had tried multiple times to attack the babies, and the owners didn't know what to do with her, so they abandoned both her, and the pups. I wasn't sure that the pups were worth saving, because mothers tend to attack puppies that have something wrong with them. So, I drove 2 hours round trip to go take a look. When I got there, I found out that mom was only 7-8 months old and the pups were all still alive, despite no food since they were born and no "warmth" either. They were in a box in the cold shelter. So, I decided to grab them, picking up 2 other dogs while I was at it. I was never planning on keeping these babies, or taking responsibility for them. Somehow, I got "stuck" with them and it's the best decision I've ever made.
Sure, there are many sleepless nights of bottle feeding and stimulating. There's many stressful days worrying about if they'll make it through the night. A couple of vets told me it wasn't likely and to be prepared for the worse. These babies didn't get ANY food until 5:30 that evening that they were born. About 10 1/2 hours after birth.
Here they are, still thriving. This is the one I decided to keep. He was attacked by mom, and she left a deep puncture wound in his back, two on his neck, and one above his eye. He's had many times where I swore he wasn't gonna make it. But he's still here, growing like a weed, and being my little baby.
