Arrival Story:
We originally had a no pets lease at our rented townhouse. As Christmas 2011 approached, I thought there'd be no better gift to our family than a fuzzy pal. We had wanted a dog for the longest time and had considered the benefits and drawbacks. The only thing left was to see if the landlady would amend the lease. She said we were such good tenants that she would if we'd sign a statement saying we'd pay for any damages the dog caused. After the go ahead from the landlady, we checked out a local rescue organization for which a friend of mine has fostered dogs. They were having a benefit breakfast the following morning and so we told the kids we were going out for pancakes. They were completely oblivious. Even when we got there and all the banners and tables were set up, they still innocently thought we were there for pancakes. After eating, we went outside of the restaurant to look at the puppies. They were all sweet, adorable dogs, but it wasn't until they brought out the last of the group that my heart melted. Here was this 11 week old mutt, best described by the rescue as a Shepherd mix, shivering as he was placed into my arms. He looked up at me and kissed my face. I knew then that he had chosen us as his family. We then asked the kids if they would like a puppy for their Christmas present and they jumped up and down with excitement. The paperwork was sent home and signed by the landlady the next morning. Pong came home to us the afternoon of 12 December 11 and has adjusted well to his forever home.

Bio:
Discovering Pong's breed mix without a genetic test actually has been a fun experience. We knew that he definitely had GSD features such as the high-set ears, the whiskers, the shading around his mouth and the wiry hairs on his belly in the typical black and tan mix of the breed, but what else was he mixed with? We thought Lab at first because of his webbed toes and the shape of his earlobes, but another trait became obvious from the very first night with our new puppy-- when left alone, he bays and howls like a hound. Considering that he's rather runty for a Sheprador, as both breeds are rather large, we thought perhaps that there was Beagle in the mix. As he grew, his features became less puppy-like and more distinct and his developing personality both seemed to point to two other breeds, who just so happen to have webbed toes-- Black and Tan Coonhound and Plotthound. Considering that Pong was originally rescued by Home At Last Dog Rescue from a high-kill shelter in the south where Coonhounds and Plotthounds are common, it makes it even more likely that my hypothesis was correct. After viewing several pictures here of B&T Coonhound mixes and Plotthound mixes and saying "OMG! This looks just like him!" to almost every single one, pretty much confirmed that my mutt is a cross between a GSD and either a B&T Coonhound and/or a Plotthound. Of course, there is also the likely probability that neither of his parents were purebred so other features may be present that are more subtle.
