Arrival Story:
I've been looking for a dog for just over a year after the third of the three dogs I had died. I looked everywhere including the local animal shelters in my area, but couldn't find the one that "clicked" with me. So, one day I pulled into a parking space at the college I was attending at the time, and saw this beautiful, white, brindle Akita, front paws on the outside of the car door near the window, watching its owners talking to some people. As I carefully passed the dog, talking to it as I passed, it bent its head down, sniffed my head, and gave me one of a heck lick across my face! Its owners came over, shocked that their dog did this, and from there we began talking about the dog. What I found out was that they were having problems with the dog, as it didn't get along with their two youngest children, so they were looking for a home for the dog. If they couldn't find a home for it, they had no other recourse but hand the dog over to the animal shelter. To make a long story short, I didn't hear from them and thought either they had worked with the dog or had rehomed her. One day, my mother had picked up the paper and looked in the classified ads and saw someone giving a purebreed Akita for free to a good home, and the next thing I knew I was making the phone call about the dog, and made arrangements with them to come to their home and check out the dog in its present home environment and ask more questions and get a better idea of how the dog behaves. Boy, did I get a great surprise! It was the dog I met a college! At any rate, I liked what I saw from my two-or-so-hour visit with them, however, I saw the dog had food aggression issues. I knew I could work with this dog from my years of training dogs, so I took the dog home with me and began working with her. Since then, I've trained her to do a lot of tricks and am currently working on some more tricks with Karma. Since then, Karma and I have this strong bond between us that I can't remember having with another dog, except one similar to the one I had with my dog, Della, who I had for years until she died several years before I got Karma. Believe me, this dog has really taught me some lessons about the Akita breed, however, I see these lessons as challenges as something I could learn from and apply to my knowledge of dog training. I guess you can say that's why Karma and I are "best of buddies!"
