When Lakme' or Taavi have a treat she wants
I decided to look for another dachshund or dachshund mix 2 months after losing Otello - It felt like I was missing the bass line of the music that had been playing in my house all these years. I saw a picture of this poor scared little doxie mix on adoptapet, with flashing signs saying urgent. It turns out she was at a shelter and her 5 days were ending; she was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. I called all day until I could get through to the shelter ( 90 minutes away), and was able to get them to hold her through the next day so I could pick her up. The next day I called several times to make sure they knew I was coming to pick her up that day. When I finally got to the shelter the next afternoon, she was in a cage of small to midsized dogs - one cage for 5 dogs. She had been bitten on the face while trying to get food by one of her cagemates, and her whole face was swollen and leaking pus. The shelter said if I didn't take her, they were going to put her down right after I left. I reached down to touch her, and despite all the pain she must have been in, she reached up off her hind legs with both arms and paws onto my hand, and when I bent down to pick her up, she put both paws around my neck - as if to say "save me from all this!" I haven't let her go ever since.
Normally shelter dogs are spayed or neutered before you can take them home, but Winky had such a bad facial abscess/infection, they had me pay an extra fee to take her unspayed ( because you never want to do elective surgery on anyone, human or otherwise, who has an infection - the wound gets infected. I brought her straight to the vet, and it turns out she also had pneumonia. I felt horrible making her stay at the vet in the oxygen cage - it was as if she had just exchanged one cage for another, but this time they were poking her MORE. But I visited her twice a day, and she got to come home after a week. 3 weeks later she was recovered enough to be spayed - which would have happened - if she hadn't already been pregnant! It turns out Winky came to me about 5 days pregnant - and despite her horrible facial infection/abscess and pneumonia, we were able to keep her healthy enough that she had an uneventful delivery of 8 pups ( with her nervous Dad on the sidelines there to help) In early July 2011. We only lost one pup, and all the pups were neutered BEFORE they went to their new forever homes. But Winky decided she needed to have one of her 7 daughters at her side, and so Kitten makes the 4th in our dog quartet
