Arrival Story:
I was with some friends at a gas station, when we saw a skin and bones mutt scrounging around for scraps. It was obvious she wanted to be friendly, but was too frightened of strangers. I sent one friend in to buy a bottle of water and some beef jerky while I kept an eye on the dog. I had to dump the entire bag of jerky on the ground to trick her into coming close enough for me to grab. She was not vicious at all, but so terrified of men. I took her to the local shelter, who had to hold her for nine days to see if anyone was looking for a lost dog matching her description. Noone claimed her, so they de-wormed her, spayed her, and I paid her adoption fee (with my wife's permission, of course). She now lives with me, my wife, and our three ferrets.

Bio:
The shelter I took her to was staffed entirely by women. Dixie has always been much more comfortable around women than men, even when she met my wife for the first time. Although, once I took her home, she started becoming used to men. She was 20lbs with her ribs showing when I adopted her, but has grown to 35 lbs without becoming fat. She is solid muscle, and seems to be large for a Feist. She has one blue and one brown eye, which it took me a long while to get used to. Like all Feists and most hunting dogs, she has a very strong drive to be dominant. I wish I could allow her and the ferrets to be in the same room together, but that is impossible. I had no idea what breed she was or how her disposition would be. She is not aggressive with the ferrets, she is driven by her instincts and very confused with the urge to chase them and their obvious status as members of the family. Unfortunately, the ferrets refuse to have anything to do with her. I think she would accept them as fellow pets if they would play with her and not constantly run away. Dixie wants to be wherever the family is and involved in what we are doing, even if it is watching TV. I am a little worried that her favorite TV show is "Dexter".
