Arrival Story:
Lucy has had many guardians. First Nan saw Lucy on the morning news, featured as a shelter dog in need of a home. Since Lucy looked so remarkably like Nan's childhood pet Missy, Nan knew she had to rescue her. But Lucy was a barker, and soon had a police record in Paso Robles and had to be spirited out of town. She went to live with GG Mama and GG Papa in West Covina. Lucy took good care of them for several years until they went into a rest home, sticking close to them when they napped in the afternoons, enjoying the cookie bribes they gave her (each of them trying to be her "favorite") and dutifully obeying all of GG Papa's many rules. Then she went to live with Mom Sharp, where she has lived happily for several more years.

Bio:
Lucy Wambat 1990 - 7/25/2007. Lucy was once diagnosed as the healthiest fourteen-year-0ld dog her vet has ever seen! She kept going and going, right up to the ripe old age of seventeen, when she began to fail. Despite her hearty appetite and frequent consumption of significant quantities of chicken, rice, baby food carrots, treats, and cheese, Lucy's weight inexplicably declined from a robust 50 pounds to a mere 32 pounds. Literally seeming to be a mere bag of fur and bones whose back legs frequently collapsed under her, Lucy nonetheless had a smile on her pretty face, a sparkle in her eye, a hop in her step - and of course a bark in her throat - to the very end. Many of her favorite people came to be with her to love her, pet her and say goodbye on her last day. Lucy was a sweet dog with a strong and ever-optimistic heart. She adapted to every new situation that came her way with both love and exuberance. We will always remember seeing Lucy's little ears pop up over the brick wall as she bounced up and down, so eager to see people and to join in the fun. We will remember her special friendship with Bozo the cat, her budding relationship with Moo the cat, and her general animosity towards all other cats and towards loud scooters and motorcycles. Lucy was a multi-dimensional character with an unknown but doubtless drama-filled backstory, and we will remember that sometimes she might just nip your nose. In particular, we will remember her persistent rivalry with Amber Lisa. Lucy, despite your decidedly common origins and unrefined ways, you had the last woof on that one!

I may not move around much. I sleep a lot. And I may have trouble getting my butt all the way onto my bed most of the time. Sure. It happens.

Yeah, and I wear this old-lady turtleneck shawl thing most of the time lately. Because I got a shorty haircut and, well, it's not as flattering a shape as it could be. I'm old and very slim and have fatty tumors, ok? And I get cold.

Oh, yeah, and I refuse to eat kibble but I will eat as much chicken and rice as you'll feed me.

But don't you EVER misunderestimate me.

Cats: assuming I see you, you had better beware. I will run after you. I will run halfway down the block. I will jump over a bush to pursue you. Probably. So watch yourself. I might not see you, but ask yourself: do you feel lucky? Do you? Cat?

Let it be known: I, Lucy Wambat Salmon-Swanson-Sharp, AM STILL HERE!

Memoirs of a barking dog

Woof.

I bark a lot.

When I say a lot you need to understand that I mean A LOT. Seriously. I have a police record and stuff. You could look it up. I'm a serious world-class championship level barker extraordinaire.

Barking fulfills me. See, I was born to run in big circles around sheep or similar and bark and nip. So when I was much much younger that is pretty much what I did all day long. Except without the sheep.

Now I am tired and I don't run as much or as fast, although I can still bop around pretty well if I am motivated enough. Like when my younger cousin Phoebe comes to visit and goes tearing around the yard like I used to. I like to follow her at a safe distance - reminds me of the good old days. She looks at me funny when I bark though. Oh, she barks now and again, but just kind of as a warning or an alert mechanism. There's no passion or artistry in it. She just doesn't feel it like I do. Some of us have the gift; some of us don't.

I could jump too. I could jump so high that I could look over the wall to see what was going on. And bark. Of course.

Woof!
