Off-leash, off-trail adventures in the woods
A month after I graduated from college, my family dog, a twelve pound, 14-year-old poodle/schnauzer mix (probable) with a goofy underbite and relentless love for tennis balls, passed away in my arms. I was devastated and left with a big hole in my heart where a dog is supposed to be. A few months later, I visited a local shelter and met six-month-old, wild child Merlin. I applied to adopt him that day, and took him home about a week later, my first "all mine" dog.
Merlin and his littermates were rescued from euthanasia at a North Carolina pound by Father John's Animal House, a no-kill shelter in New Jersey.
Merlin appears to be some sort of herding/bully mix. He is an ankle nipper, insatiably curious, occasionally frustrating to the point of tears, and finally, a great big cuddlebug, which of course makes up for everything else.
