Arrival Story: Koda came to my attention through a network of people who rescue dogs, and particularly, Golden Retrievers. His parents who divorced did not want him and no one was taking care of him. His owner was going to take him to the shelter for euthanasia. Sparing him from euthanasia this morning by some folks intervening, he'll be transferred into my hands tomorrow, at which time we'll start our journey as foster parents. Whether it is only temporary, or ends up being in our home on a permanent basis, it is my intent to make the remainder of his life as healthy and happy as it possibly can be.
We begin this new journey with a whole plethora of unknowns, and a good deal of work ahead of us as we all adjust to our new addition and get him the love, care, and attention he so desparately needs and thank God for his presence and Koda's continued life.
Koda arrived this afternoon and has spent the past 6 hours settling into the home and getting to know our Golden, Moose. Aside from being extremely needy due to the lack of human attention over the past couple of years, he's in pretty good shape. One of the folks who took him from the owner (owner surrendered) bathed him. He goes to the groomer tomorrow and the vet on Monday. He's driving my older golden kind of nuts but he's tolerating him well and Koda is currently asleep on the floor next the the couch. He has great potential to be a wonderful dog and has several years of quality life left in him. God blessed our house once again today.
9/24/11 - So here we are, a little over 2 weeks later. After a period of adjustment and "Dad" warming up to Koda, he's here to stay. there's been discussion in our house over his behavior, his outward transformation (still a work in progress), and what life must've been like for him the past few years, and we agreed that he will stay. After the first weekend with him in the house, there was never any doubt in my mind, but my one-dog-household adamant husband was much tougher to convince. He sees the happiness and love in Koda's eyes, and the outward signs and manifestations of his neglect that are healing, and has come to terms that Koda was meant to stay here. I'm proud to call Koda a family member. We saved a life a couple weeks ago; but just today can I truly say we saved a life.
