Arrival Story:
After the loss of our VIXEN, we decided to look for a senior dog to adopt. Old dogs need homes too, and all too often end up spending what time they have left in shelters. We finally found Gertie on the OLD DOG HAVEN website.

Gertie was a breeding bitch at a puppy mill until the rescue group saved her. She spent the next 2+ years in foster homes until Hulk and I found her.

Gertie's Story

Gertie is gone

This is Gertie's "brother", Hulk...........I have to relate some sad news. Gertie disappeared some time ago. Dad and I were and still are very sad. I should have written this diary entry sooner, but Dad and I thought we should wait to see if she comes back.

One of the first things Dad and I taught Gertie after she adopted us was to never go through an open door (or the gate) until Dad said OKAY! And Gertie was very good about it. She would always sit at the door or gate and wait for permission to pass through.

Well, Dad and I had gone to town for groceries.......when we arrived back home, Gertie was asleep on the couch, as always. While carrying in the groceries, Dad and I, as we always do, left the gate open while we go back and forth bringing in the groceries. Apparently Gertie sneaked out through the open gate and went for a walk in the forest, because we noticed, after the groceries were brought in, that she was gone.

We drove all over the area searching for her, then made some lost dog flyers and posted them at the store and on the community bulletin board.

Gertie was wearing her ID, and everybody around here knows Dad, so if she had gone to visit any of the people in the area, we would have been notified. The coyotes had been hanging around pretty close, so we think she may have gone into the forest and been eaten by coyotes. It is so sad, but a good lesson to me and to others, to always obey our person's rules. They are for our own good. Also a good lesson for Dad....never leave the gate open, even for a short time!

A Party!

Well, I have exciting news! Amanda, Dad's great granddaughter, was having her 18th birthday, and was having a PARTY!! I had never been to a party, didn't know what one was, but I can tell you now that Parties are fine things to have!

Dad, Hulk and I went to Charlene and Greg's house a day before the party at Amanda's. Charlene and Greg are my "sister" and brother in law---Dad's daughter and her husband. Amanda is Charlene's granddaughter.

Dad made Hulk stay at Charlene's house because Dad thought he would get stressed out. (Hulk, not Dad!) Hulk wasn't happy about it, especially after I told him about all the wonderful things I had to eat! There were CHILDREN there who kept giving me stuff that Dad won't let me have; things like bites of birthday cake! Dad kept telling them not to give those kind of things to me, but they did it anyway, and I didn't want to hurt their feelings by refusing their kind offerings! Everybody, even the grown-ups, made a big fuss over me and said what a good girl I am.

I didn't even snap at Poncho, the Chihuahua, who wouldn't quit shoving his nose up my butt! I just kept sitting down so he couldn't do it!

So, it was a fine week-end, and I hope for more to come!

Groundhog Day

Greetings from the frozen north!

I was looking forward to February 2nd because Hulk told me that that was GROUNDHOG DAY, the day that the groundhog comes out of his hole to check the weather. He is very afraid of his shadow, and if he sees it, he runs back to his hole and doesn't come out for six more weeks. This brings six more weeks of winter!

I am ready for spring, so I was hoping for a cloudy day, but that was not to be. February 2nd dawned bright and sunny; the stupid groundhog saw his shadow, so now winter will stick around for another six weeks! Well, as long as my friend STOVE has plenty of wood to eat, he will keep me warm, I will only have to freeze when I go outside to potty.

Your pal,
Gertie Mae Komar
