Arrival Story:
I volunteer at the local animal shelter and occasionally foster for them. Red was on his last day before being PTS so I brought him home to foster him. That was August 5th 2008. Due to his breed, size, age, and multiple health issues we were never able to find him a forever home, so we have decided to add him to our pack :)

Bio:
By best guess Red is a 108 pound American Pit Bull Terrier / Bullmastiff cross. He is blind in one eye and has severe sensitivity to light so his eyes are closed most of the time if it is bright out. He has hip and knee problems and is terrified of other dogs. He is a sweet boy and LOVES people, he also thinks he is a lap dog bol

Dog of the Day - and I missed it!

I just wanted to say thank you for all of the gifts and pmails from my wonderful pals.
We've been really busy lately and today is the first day that we have been online in a really long time.
Mom was shocked when she found out that I had been Dog of the Day and so disapointed that we missed it.

ADOPT 2011 CONTEST

There I was alone sitting on the cold cement floor, locked in a cage, hidden away in a corner.
I had seen so many dogs come and go from these cages, they were taken in to a small room at the end of a long hallway and never came back.

People would walk by me and not even look or they would look and say "he's to old", "he's partially blind" or worse, "he's a pit bull".
Nobody would take the time to talk to me, to pet me, to walk me.

One day they put a red tag in the sleeve on my cage door. I had seen these be put on the other dogs doors before they took them to the room.
It was getting later and nobody had come to pet me, nobody had come to take me home.

Finally this nice lady came to my cage, she opened it and took me out. She sat on that cold floor with me, petting me. It was so nice to feel somebody love me, I gently kissed her hand and laid quietly beside her. After a little while she put a collar and leash on me and then walked me outside. After a short walk she put me in her car and we drove for a long time. Then we arrived at a house, and she took me inside. The floor was so soft and I had a bed, clean water, fresh food, lots of love, and wonderful things called treats.
The lady told me she was going to find me a home where people would love me and treat me right.

As time went on, I had to make several trips to the vet. He told the lady that I had to many problems and it would be best to have me put to sleep. You know what that lady did ? Well I will tell you, she put me in her car and took me to another vet ! There she was told that I was going blind, I was heart worm positive, and I had hip dysplasia.

First thing was heart worm treatment, it wasn't so bad. I got lots of rest and then after a little while I felt so much better. After that I had surgery on my hips. It took a long while to recover, and then life was great !

I still waited a long time for these people to come and take me to my forever home. It never happened. Then the nice lady told me that I would be staying in her home FOREVER that her home - our home - is where I belong. That nice lady is now my Momma.

I still have another surgery scheduled down the road, but my life has gotten so much better. I'm a happy boy now and I live like a KING.

If my Mom didn't adopt me that day, I wouldn't be alive today. I wish more dogs would get adopted so that they don't have to go in that room like I almost did.
