Leave a bone for Beauty - RIP 2005-2011

Birthday:
December 4th 2005

Arrival Story:
I first saw Beauty in early December on a country road in Liberty County, Texas. It was obvious she was lactating and desperate for food. Because of traffic, I couldn't stop, and when I got to a point I could turn around and go back, she was gone. Two days later, I saw her again and immediately stopped my car and got out food, water and bowls I had been carrying around in the trunk of my car. She wouldn't come near the food until I had gotten back in my car and started to drive away. I had to take pictures of her through the back window of my car, as she would run off if I got out of the car. It took about 4 days of feeding her for her to let me get close enough to touch her and see the beautiful nest she had built in the woods for her two pups. Of course that nest had no cover, so I think she was grateful for the igloo I was able to obtain and drag into the woods next to to the nest. However, on the 5th day, after a freeze the night before, she decided she was ready to be rescued. I checked on her early that morning after realizing the temperature had gone to freezing the night before, and after making sure she and her puppies were ok in the igloo, I headed back to my car, not realizing she was following me. I opened the driver's door to get in and before I could, she jumped in, sat in the passenger seat and loooked at me as though to say, "go get my babies and let's get out of here!" She hadn't allowed me to touch her babies before this, but she knew I wouldn't hurt them and only wanted to help her and the babies. I wrapped the pups up in the soft fluffy towel I had put in the igloo that morning and took them all home. They were all taken in by a vet clinic in South West Houston where they were nursed back to health, and both puppies were quickly adopted. Beauty is still at the clinic going through heartworm treatment. Once she has completed her treatment, she will be spayed and will then be looking for a home. Beauty will need to be in a home with only male dogs, or no other dogs, and no children, as she doesn't seem to like kids or female dogs. She's about 5 years old, very sweet and very protective of those she loves and trusts.

Bio:
On March 9th, the vet clinic where Beauty was being taken care of, decided they no longer wanted to deal with her, so they pawned her off on a boarding facility for "training" of her supposed aggression issues. Even though I had been making the 100 mile round trip drive to visit her every two or three weeks, once she was moved to the boarding facility, I was told I wasn't allowed to visit her there. I was not at all happy about it. I don't know exactly what happened to her there, but I know the last time I saw her, other than a bought with kennel cough, she was healthy and was at a healthy weight. When I finally got to see her on Saturday, April 2, 2011, not only was she so sick with pneumonia that it took all she had to get up off the towel she was laying on, it made her start coughing so bad she had to lay back down and didnt' get up again until I was leaving. She had also lost weight and her elbows all looked like she had been laying on concrete the whole time she was there! Plus, she had two small wounds on her lower back, that while healed, were still red, had no hair, and hadn't been there the last time I saw her. The woman at the vet clinic swears that this boarding facility is very good and that they are used quite a lot for agressive dogs by another rescue in Houston. I don't believe her. I think she's trying to convince herself and everyone else! Beauty looked awful and as sick as she was, she had been sick for awhile and the boarding facility either didn't pay attention or didn't care and I think it was both! Plus, I've chatted with another person in rescue and who does training who knows the woman who runs the boarding facility, and she was very surprised to hear that the woman who owns the place was doing any kind of training and/or long term boarding, that she's well known for transport and/or dog walking during the day for people who are working, and she also knows that the facility has a few kennels for the occasional overnight or weekend. I was told that while Beauty was there, all her agression issues were addressed and were no longer a problem, but I don't believe it. I know Beauty had some issues, and who wouldn't with all we KNOW she went through and what we don't know, but I do think she was abused while she was there. That's my own personal opinion, because of course I don't have any proof. I do have a few pictures I took when I saw her Saturday the 2nd, and they can prove neglect, but not abuse. Beauty was hospitalized on the 2nd and unfortunately two days later, she attacked the vet who had been caring for her since last December 2010. She didn't bite the vet, but she cornered her in the kennel. The clinic called and said get her out now or we're putting her down. My friend (who has been paying the vet bill) and I discussed it and cried about it, but we decided it would be best to put her down and end her suffering. She didn't have any quality of life living in a kennel all the time, and all the rescue groups I had contacted around the state, and even in other states, turned me down because she's a Pit and/or all their fosters are full. We didn't have any where else for her to go, and since she attacked someone she's known for months, there was no telling what else she might do. RIP Beauty! I hope you know how much I loved you!! Even though you didn't have the chance at a great life like I had hoped, your babies are being well taken care of and are loved too!
