Arrival Story:
Wahya, now being fostered in New England, came to Southpaws Express at the request of a shelter worker in rural Louisiana, after her owner dumped her at the facility. She loved Wahya and was concerned about people who might adopt her, as there is a vanity "wolfdog" fixation in the region. She is, indeed, very much a purebred Alaskan Malamute, originally from a kennel in Tennessee. It is quite astounding that someone could go through all the trouble of out-of-state breeder purchase and raising a Malamute pup and after five years, having not even trained her to "sit," abandon her at a high kill shelter, but alas that is a pretty typical story for the region. It would be even more unfathomable were you to meet the girl in person, for she is huge, charismatic, regal, and a playful pussycat as well! Wahya is every bit the Malamute for people who adore the breed. Proud, sassy, flirtatious, capable, magnificently loyal, a vat of competency. No one who met her could fathom that she would discarded anyone ever! Wahya is an alpha girl with an upstanding and confident nature, and the many people who are drawn to her always ask if it is ok to pet her, which of course it is ;) To those she knows well, she is fast to give you her belly for a rub or melt into you in some way....either that or do her play bow. She is an absolute charmer, and she knows it! She is getting a good preliminary training foundation under her at this time, and is doing VERY well! She's a Malamute....she's independent...but very cooperative, as long as she sees a reason (which usually has to do with touching her....she is very tactile). She's not very noisy for the breed....occasional howls for a few seconds immediately after left on her own, but then she settles in. Wahya has prey drive and is dominant....not dog aggressive per se, but every dog she meets is a potential challenge and one she will gladly answer. We recommend her as an only dog, and no cats (she will ignore cats sitting quietly, but anything that moves gets her interest big time). She needs a Malamute savvy adopter who knows of the exercise and stimulation requirements of this breed, and someone responsible enough to manage a prey driven alpha girl responsibly in their community. She has excellent nerves and character, is very stable and well put together, and will be an absolute dream dog for the right person. She is no less than jaw dropping in person!!!! Wahya is spayed, UTD, HW negative and microchipped. Her adopt fee is $300; an application is available on the southpawsexpress.org site.
