Arrival Story:
My mother and a friend were just browsing dogs at Petland and mom saw Bentley and immediately fell in love with him, big time. Dad didn't like dogs at all at the time and mom had to leave the store without him but she set up all the required paperwork and stuff just in case she would come back the next day to get him. She came home and spoke to dad and made it clear that she couldn't go back into that store to look at him if she didn't take him home with her. Dad (probably by the grace of God) said it was fine and we could go "look at him". Well it turned out he was fine with us buying him and I was ecstatic! We took our little darling home with us at that moment. He's been our cutie ever since!

Eating regularly!

Bentley is eating regularly now that I started cooking for him. I give him his food in the evening or night-time and he eats it before I wake up. So I'm very excited to know that he is willing to eat what I cook for him. That is a huge relief!

I need to start branching out what I feed him. I've been feeding him chicken and green beans, or hamburger and green beans. I think he'll eat peas but I haven't officially given him peas as part of his meal. So when I get back to the store (probably tomorrow) I'll pick up frozen peas. I know I can't feed him corn because he had a bout of sickness caused by corn. He threw it all up, everything that was in his stomach. And was vomiting the rest of the day and night. We took him to the vet and she said to never give corn as part of a meal. But she also said feed nothing but boiled chicken and rice... He won't eat rice, so I don't give that to him anymore. Tonight he's getting hamburger and green beans. I'm going to cut up some carrots and see if he'll eat them... :) He's picky.

Cooking for Bentley

I'm learning how to cook for Bentley. Actually I'm learning to cook for myself, too. I never really learned how to cook so most of what I know is self taught.

Bentley refuses to eat kibble or canned food so my only other option is to cook for him. He sometimes eats cooked food when I set it down but more recently he's snubbing that off, too. I don't know what to do! So to be a better dog-mommy I bought a book on amazon called Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats" by Richard H. Pitcairn. I hope this helps. Some friends recommended it in a forum thread where I asked for help learning to cook for my dog. Maybe this will help my cat as well.

Bentley is finally eating!

After several weeks of barely eating (and losing weight) I've found a way to get Bentley to eat. Home-cooked meals. I picked up the canned dog food we've always left down for him and cooked him up some chicken and rice. He at all of the chicken and about half of the rice. Originally, the food almost filled the plate I put it on which was a standard sized corelle saucer. I was elated!

It was around 1:30pm when he ate. I just made hamburgers and green beans and gave him some but he wasn't all that interested. He did pick out some of the meat and eat it and maybe a bean or two but left soon after. So I'll put it down in the morning for him to eat. Maybe he only needs fed once a day?

Bentley has always been a super picky eater. He rarely ate kibble as a puppy unless I sat down on the floor and hand-fed him kibble one by one. He thought it was a treat I guess. But he soon quit taking it from me.

As a puppy about a week after we got him, he was about 1.9 pounds and about 9 weeks old at that time. He actually had a seizure from low blood sugar. We rushed him to the all night vet hospital at least 30 minutes away. They put him in the hospital and got him to eat and gave him fluids. They sent him home with something similar to the prescription ID food (if it wasn't that)... He ate some that next day but then wouldn't eat any of it after that.

So we've been struggling with him for 3 years now to get him to eat. I guess I'm just going to have to feed him home-cooked meals. At least it'll get me to cook more. Just for him, I'll do it. ;)

I hope tomorrow is as good as today with him eating. I won't mind making chicken and rice every day (or every few days and keeping it in the fridge... IF he'll eat it. I want my baby to be healthy and I don't want him losing more weight. He's at the perfect weight for his size.
