If you were here

If you were here today old girl, you would have enjoyed the wonderful weather.

Lately it's been cool, but the sun is bright and shines the warm rays on my face just as it would warm your coat. You would have taken your long nap in the warm glow of the sun on top of the soft grass, before finally deciding to wake up and move. We might have walked around the block, crunching leaves beneath our feet or maybe just have spent time in the yard watching leaves fall and chasing pesky squirrels who dared to come down.

This time of year always seemed to be your favorite, and seeing the beautiful autumn trees with the warm sunshine and soft cool breeze made me think of you. Thinking of you being here with me... made me smile remembering all the good memories we shared out in that back yard amongst those leaves... Every day you are with me and because of you I remember to enjoy what I'm given. You're always in my heart.

"Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim."
(Vicki Harrison)

"There's a stone I had made for Luke at the top of the hill road, where the pasture opens wide and the setting sun highlights the words carved into its face. "That'll do, Luke, that'll do." The words are said to working dogs all over the world when the chores are done and the flock is settled: "That'll do dog, come home now, your work is done."

[Lucky's] work is done too. [She] took my heart and ran with it, and [she's] running still, fast and strong, a piece of my heart bound up with [hers], forever."
(Patricia McConnell)

One year ago we parted.

Last Friday was the anniversary of our good bye.

A whole year without you, it seems surreal somedays. Other days I feel like I have almost forgotten you, the feel of your coat or the sounds as you moved around the house. I feel guilty those days, how could I forget you?

You were an amazing dog who taught me about honesty, loyalty, love, and true friendship. I learned not to judge others for their looks, but to not be afraid to admit there are just bad people out there. I learned to love and defend those who are close to me, and to be selfless when it comes them. I can only hope one day I can become the person you thought I was. I will never forget or stop loving you. You're always with me.

You are always in my heart, old girl. Rest easy in heaven.

Thinking of You in Song

From the fox and the hound. This song is so true, you'll always be in my heart old girl.

We met, it seems, such a short time ago
You looked at me - needing me so
And I found out I needed you too
I remember how we used to play
I recall those rainy days
The fire's glow
That kept us warm
And now I find - we're both alone
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be

Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be

Forever and ever, always.

A poem for you

Lucky, I was thinking of you today when I watched Lenny play in the snow; just as you did for 14 years. And I thought of this poem that brings me such comfort...I love you girl and I certianly hope you're very near.

All Is Well

Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used
Put no difference in your tone,
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household world that it always was,
Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It it the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near,
Just around the corner.
All is well.

Missing You

Lucky,

You left our lives September 23, 2010. Such a heart breaking day... Still, there isn't a day that goes by where one of us doesn't speak your name. We miss you baby girl, and pray you find comfort in the heaven. You brought us so much joy, love, and comfort and I hope in the end we could give that in return.

We always thought you were lucky, but that was backwards. We were the ones who were lucky. A salute to your life has come in the form of rescuing a pup who hadn't had much of your luck, and now has a chance at a wonderful life. I think you'd like the little bugger, named Lenny. Please watch over him and keep the pup safe.

We love you, and a day doesn't go by without missing you. Peace and love baby girl, I'll see ya on the other side.
