Arrival Story:
When my family moved into a bigger house with a decent back yard, my dad promised my brother and I if we slept in our own beds for 2 months we could get a puppy. However, my dad didn't make us wait that long and soon in a few weeks we had an 8 week old shepherd puppy. She was "lucky" because she was said to be the runt and there was little interest in her. However, over the years we learned that was backwards; we were the ones who were lucky.

Bio:
Lucky was a wonderful dog, who faithfully defended her family and home with the brave heart many shepherds demonstrate. She was calm, almost completely bomb proof. She was loving and protective towards children, though with age she sought the comforting bed instead. Lucky taught me to respect the powerful breed, and about responsibility, and about love, life, and ultimately loss. Her death made me realize how little time we really do have. "The days may seem long, but they are short. And the number we have of them is short" I have my regrets, Lucky deserved more than I could have ever given her. In the words of Sara Evans...my heart will never be the same. "One must wonder why man's best friend's lives are so short. Maybe it to teach us a lesson, that there is love after love" o "I have sent you on a journey....not because I did not love you....but because I loved you too much to force you to stay" & "Goodbye may seem forever, Farewell is like the end, But in my heart's the memory and there you'll always be"

A Shepherd's Sentiments

If you were here

If you were here today old girl, you would have enjoyed the wonderful weather.

Lately it's been cool, but the sun is bright and shines the warm rays on my face just as it would warm your coat. You would have taken your long nap in the warm glow of the sun on top of the soft grass, before finally deciding to wake up and move. We might have walked around the block, crunching leaves beneath our feet or maybe just have spent time in the yard watching leaves fall and chasing pesky squirrels who dared to come down.

This time of year always seemed to be your favorite, and seeing the beautiful autumn trees with the warm sunshine and soft cool breeze made me think of you. Thinking of you being here with me... made me smile remembering all the good memories we shared out in that back yard amongst those leaves... Every day you are with me and because of you I remember to enjoy what I'm given. You're always in my heart.

"Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim."
(Vicki Harrison)

"There's a stone I had made for Luke at the top of the hill road, where the pasture opens wide and the setting sun highlights the words carved into its face. "That'll do, Luke, that'll do." The words are said to working dogs all over the world when the chores are done and the flock is settled: "That'll do dog, come home now, your work is done."

[Lucky's] work is done too. [She] took my heart and ran with it, and [she's] running still, fast and strong, a piece of my heart bound up with [hers], forever."
(Patricia McConnell)

One year ago we parted.

Last Friday was the anniversary of our good bye.

A whole year without you, it seems surreal somedays. Other days I feel like I have almost forgotten you, the feel of your coat or the sounds as you moved around the house. I feel guilty those days, how could I forget you?

You were an amazing dog who taught me about honesty, loyalty, love, and true friendship. I learned not to judge others for their looks, but to not be afraid to admit there are just bad people out there. I learned to love and defend those who are close to me, and to be selfless when it comes them. I can only hope one day I can become the person you thought I was. I will never forget or stop loving you. You're always with me.

You are always in my heart, old girl. Rest easy in heaven.

Thinking of You in Song

From the fox and the hound. This song is so true, you'll always be in my heart old girl.

We met, it seems, such a short time ago
You looked at me - needing me so
And I found out I needed you too
I remember how we used to play
I recall those rainy days
The fire's glow
That kept us warm
And now I find - we're both alone
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be

Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart is a memory
And there you'll always be

Forever and ever, always.
