After losing Tsuki to intestinal lymphoma, we waited a bit before taking on another dog. We fostered a Malinois mix, and unfortunately she just wasn't a good fit for us. She did end up finding a new home, though! In the end, we decided we wanted an older dog who'd had a chance to mellow... no more puppies and house training.
Then we met Terra.
She'd been adopted out at about 5mo of age, but returned because the previous adopters stated that she was unable to be house-trained. According to the intake paperwork for our local Humane Society, the employee that accepted the return discovered that the people were letting a 5mo old puppy have free reign of the house. No wonder it didn't work. So, Hubby and I talked, and decided to meet her. It was love at first site. She's an unusual combination of Pointer and AmStaff with a beautiful sleek body (complete with some puppy chub, though!), and very cute webbed feet. Even at six months of age, she's very well behaved, and already knows 'sit', to sit at the door before it's opened, and the staff at the rescue were working on 'stay'. We've got some training to do, but the crate training is going very well so far (first night in the crate and no whining or crying!), and she's very eager to please and learn, and despite her age, she's very calm.

When your dog is driving you nuts, and because of the weather you can't play outside, give your dog a Kong with some peanut butter.
I know this combination is extremely common, but I was just reminded of how entertaining it was to watch them try and get to their treat.
You see, we have a storm rolling in, and Terra really has no body fat, no fur coat, and she has thin skin. This all adds up to her getting frighteningly cold if there's a cold breeze or wind about. Even when she's busy playing. We ordered a jacket for her from Dr.'s Foster and Smith, but we did it based upon their measurement/sizing recommendations and it was WAY too large. So big, in fact, that once we get it on her it doesn't stay on. Needless to say, unless the weather is moderately comfortable, she doesn't go outside.
Normally, I'd play with her, but I'm coming down with something and I'm miserable. This doesn't mean that she needs to suffer, though. This is where the (in)famous Peanut Butter Kong enters the picture.
We've had Terra for about two weeks now, and this is the first time we've ever done this combo with her. You know what? It was absolutely hilarious. I'd forgotten the funny faces, the intense concentration... She's been working on it for over an hour, and she's still going to town!
