Arrival Story:
We had lost our three dogs,Cody,Max,and Meghan,and were doing fostering for an animal shelter near our house. They called us saying they had a dog for us to foster! We went to look at "Carter" the name the shelter had given to Wink. We found out that he was nine years old. He had lived with this family since he was a puppy,and then he got glaucoma in one eye,and a cataract in the other eye. He was going to have to have surgery to remove the eye with glaucoma. The old family didn't want to deal with that,so they dumped him at a shelter. They had called Wink "Baby". When we saw Wink for the first time he hadn't had the eye removed yet,and it was as big as a golf ball! We agreed to foster him,and we heard he was a permanent foster,meaning that if we wanted to,we could keep Wink without paying the shelter fee,and the shelter would cover all of Wink's vet bills. Of course we agreed,not only for the free vet bills and no adoption fee,but because we fell in love with Wink! We had his eye removed soon afterwards,and then he came to live with us! We called him Wink because it looked like he was winking with only one eye!
Bio:
Wink had a lot of problems. He not only had the one eye removed,he couldn't see a thing out of his other eye since it had a cataract. We didn't want to bring him in for surgery on that,as he was so old when he lost his sight in that eye.
Wink had awful teeth. His breath smelled,and he had a hard time chewing things. But there was no way we wanted to put him under for dental cleaning for fear of him not waking up again.
Wink had THE WORSE separation anxiety. If I went to take a shower,get the mail,etc,Wink would howl and howl and howl. If we went away for long periods of time he would go into the bathroom,push the door closed with his snout,go to the bathroom,and HOWL,HOWL,HOWL as if we were abandoning him.(We think this is because his old owners abandoned him at the shelter)
Wink died on February 24,2009 at home. He had been unable to walk for about a week before he died,and he couldn't eat or drink. We just stayed home with him and carried him places,and fed him warm, soft,easy-to-chew food. Our hairless Sphynx cat Gidgit loved Wink. Sometimes other cats and dogs would pick on Wink because he was "different",but Gidgit,being hairless,knew what it was like to be different. She would snuggle up to Wink in front of the fire.
The night before Wink died I thought we were going to have to put him down. We really didn't want to. We thought it would be better for him to die in his own safe,cozy home,rather than on a cold exam table at the vet. But,we knew he was suffering,and had planned on bringing him in on the twenty fourth of February,2009. On Tuesday morning,the twenty fourth,Wink had passed in his sleep. Everybody was sad yet relieved that Wink had had a peaceful end.
We will miss Wink forever,but his memory will forever live on.

WOOFS! I'M WINK,AND I AM A ONE-EYED,BLIND BEAGLE! I AM AN ANGEL NOW,I LEFT FOR THE BRIDGE EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO TODAY. I WASN'T SICK,JUST VERY,VERY OLD,AND I DIED PEACEFULLY AT HOME. MOM AND HER FAMILY MISS ME SO MUCH! THEY SAY I WAS A "DELIGHTFUL,HANDSOME LITTLE DOG". I MISS THEM,TOO,BUT IT'S VERY NICE UP HERE,AND I'M WITH ALL MY FRIENDS!
