Arrival Story:
I always say I adopted Duke from the local Humane Society...but truth is, he sort of adopted me. It was love at first sight! We had a geriatric Yellow Lab at the time and knew his time to move on was coming, so we went to the shelter to "just look." (Who just looks at shelters?!) And there was Duke...a 4 month-old bundle of black energy, nervous, clinging to his handler and scared of the world. He puked the entire way home and I had to carry him into the house because he was shaking so badly and scared to death to go in. I didn't have a CLUE what I was getting into with him! And I would not change one minute of life with him. Duke is the most challenging dog I have ever shared my life with. He is reactive, anxious, sound-sensitive, fearful, shy...and also the world's best snuggler, a constant (if not clingy!) companion, loaded with personality quirks and truly my soul-mate dog. The bond we've developed through working through his many issues has cultivated a deep and profound relationship unlike any other I've had with a dog. He is my best buddy. :) We do TONS of training for confidence boosting and fun...his favorite is sniffing! I know that Duke is mixed with Great Dane, but his other half has always been sort of a mystery. I'm convinced, after we recently got involved in tracking classes, that he is also mixed with perhaps coonhound. He has an amazing nose! Ahh...I could go on an on about my handsome boy! Duke has taught me lessons in perserverance, patience and overcoming hurdles that few people I know could come close to. He is an amazing dog and I'm truly blessed to have him in my life.
