Scratchy Scratchy!

Why must this beautiful dog scratch all the time?

I love my dog almost more than my husband! Over about the last year and a half i had noticed that he was scratching himself so much that she was losing hair on his sides. Then he started chewing on himself so much he was bleeding and losing more and more hair. He was even making his ears bleed and causing ear infections. I was taking Inki to the vet like clockwork every three months for a steriod shot. We thought it was allergies. Just within the last 2 months the vet and I had discussed the possibility that it is not allergies but something else. They did a skin scraping and found demodectic mites, which are commonly found on dogs and cats, but can become out of control due to a weak immune system or even stress. I have tried every type of shampoo, including iodine shampoo, ivomex drops every day for the last 60 days, benadryl, change in diet (currently Iams lamb and rice), antibiotics and so on. Nothing seems to be curing the itchiness that is plaguing my best friend. The vet has told me that it would be best to have him neutered because the mites this severe would be passed on genetically to offspring. I wish he could talk to tell me whats wrong. All I want is for him to be healthy and happy for the rest of his life, not miserable and scratchy. Any advice?
