My Tail of Devotion for Lupu Monster

As all adoptive moms tell their child, I loved you before I knew you. Seems improbable, but it’s true. I had wanted a dog my entire life and had a lot of ideas of what you would be like. You aren’t like any of them. You are better than I ever imagined. I envisioned me in cute shoes, cute skirts, playing catch with my dog. You are too rough and tumble for that. I wanted a Greyhound, your dad wanted a Pit Bull. You look like a mix of the both.

Two years before we met I chose your name, Lupu. It’s Romanian for wolf, but I chose it as your name because it sounded like a fun name. You responded to it by the end of our first day together. You proved to be more fun than your name.

My devotion to you goes to my very core. I think we taught each other the meaning of the word. You taught me when you ate every single pair of shoes I had the first 6 months I had you. I was making very little money that summer and literally spent the summer walking around Chicago in a $1 pair of bamboo flip flops.

Then you ate the couch. You literally ate every square inch except the spot where I sat. Well, you left springs and some of the wood frame. It was embarrassing to invite guys over and have no where for them to sit!

Remember when you were a very aggressive dog? I had to walk you at 6am and almost midnight in order to avoid other dogs and people. We went to a trainer and the behavior got worse. Our walks were miserable. Then we found our trainer, who saved our live together and let us enjoy each other more. He was an angel. Now you are an angel and people comment all of the time on what a well behaved dog you are.

You have taught me devotion in many ways: When I had to work two jobs you only got walked at 5 am and 10 pm. You didn’t hold it against me and you loved me the same. Even though I didn't have much energy to love you with!

When your dad and I broke up, you showed your love for me; you bit him when he came over for a short visit! That was great and eliminated my need to say anything to him—I didn’t have to, you took care of it all with one bite! Then you welcomed him back into our lives and resumed loving him unconditionally when I did.

I love that you have such a great sense of humor and laugh so much. We find similar things funny. I love the jump you do when you find something funny and I may have missed it. You find humor in much of life.

You and I have great communication and you seem to understand everything I say. When I’m anxious, so are you. When I’m looking for parking, you preen over the back of the seat and watch the road. You guard our house, guard my belongings when other dogs are around and guard my food if the cat tries to eat it. You heard the cats back into the house when they try to escape.

I love that you turn the water off and on in the tub when you thirsty.

You jump to my rescue if you think anyone is trying to hurt me. You also may have saved my life the night I fell asleep with a candle burning. You removed the blanket that caught on fire and went and barked and nudged your dad until he woke up and put the fire out.

Then you moved with me to Mexico and you loved it as much as I did. One of my favorite memories of you is the joy on your face while you ran through the forests and up and down the mountains. And how you also came back to check on me every 2 minutes, since you were much faster than I was.

I feel you are my soul mate and we have similar personalities: unrestrained joy when we see someone we like, go out of our way to avoid contact with someone we don’t like, we give warnings when being pushed, and both snap once we’ve been pushed to our limit.

We are mischievous. We laugh more than most. We love pizza and can be food aggressive. We are sensitive, despite how tough we look. We have the same hair color. We never , ever forget our friends.

I’ve lived so much of my life with you. You are my best friend. You are my constant companion. I accept that you will never let people into our home easily or let a stranger near me. You accept that I can be strict, but will one day relent and let you eat that nasty Mexican Hairless dog in our neighborhood.

You are the best thing in my world.
