Bio:
Wyatt was my best friend. I have had dogs my hole life. I was raised on a small free rang chicken farm in Lawrence ks. My mother loved dogs and we always had 2 or 3 around. But when i was 21 my boyfriend at the time and i had been together for a wile, and we decided to get a dog. i already had a 6 month old rat terrier, but we were ready for a big dog. he had had a great dane in the past and i had always wanted one, so we decided that was what we would get. we did all the research and learned about blot and all the feeding requirements and a lot of other things. We found a breeder in KC not long after, we went and looked at the puppys when they were only 3 weeks old. he was the biggest and the most friendly. We visited him every week tell he was ready at 9 weeks. He was amazing!! He picked up on every thing so quickly. He only had a few accidents and that was because of a bacterial overgrowth in his bowel common in danes, and was soon resolved. he learned sit with in the first week and was leash trained soon after. in all he learned sit, down, stay, speak, shake left and right, up, go lay down, kennel, lode up, and fetch all by hand signals(he new them by word too) and he was growing too, by 4 mounts he was 45 lbs!! his mother was only 107. and the father was not much more, but by 6 mounts he was 75 pounds!!! we had him on a good dane diet with just the right amount of protein and all. it was called eagle pack large and giant breed, (recommended at all the dane sights). so his growth was not do to to much protein, he was just a big boy. the vet thought he would be at least 185lbs when he was all done. all in all he was a healthy dog for a dane, only the occasional bought with diarrhea and some miner allergies. his temperament was amazing to. with in a few weeks he had out grown my 12 pound rat terrier but despite being a rambunctious puppy he was so gentile with her. he would always lay down to play with her. he new she was the boss. Wyatt went every where with me. we went daily to the dog park and always got complements on how well behaved he was. he never once showed any sine of aggression (except for one time when walking him down town and someone dog snapped at me, Wyatt lunged in between the dog and me and growled slightly, that was all. i told him to sit and he did and no longer paid any mind to the other dog.)he was so good at reading me too. he new exactly what i needed and when. he was always there for me and my bf. (my bf had only had 2 other dog in his life before Wyatt and was in absolute love with him as i was.) when he was about 8 months old my boyfriend went to a training course in Alabama for 6 weeks. on the 5th week Wyatt became suddenly ill. he had been coughing but he had some allergies, and was not uncommon for him to do. but this time it wasn't just allergies. he was lethargic and drooling excessively. he was burning up too. it was midnight and i was frantically calling my vet leaving messages on the emergency line. but he never called back. i pop Wyatt an aspirin and was getting ready to rush him to the emergency clinic when all of a sudden he seemed fine. he was playing with Kate the rat terrier so i decided to what and take him in the morning. Well in the morning he was fine the vet saw nothing wrong other than maybe a small upper respiratory and put him on some antibiotics. but latter that night he was really sick again. he was not as bad as the night before and the vet said that the nights would be worse then the day so i just keeped a close eye on him. my boyfriend got home that next day and showered Wyatt in love who was still not feeling well. but i felt safe with my boyfriend home to take care of him to go back to work. the next morning Wyatt still had a fever. a bad one. his temp was 105 so i put him in the shower and that cooled him down. i also gave him 1 adult aspirin( he was 10 months and 120 lbs). but i had to go to work so i woke my boyfriend up and told him to watch him and if he gets hot again to rush him to the vet. i called the vet on the way to work but they said he was in surgery and they would have him call me as soon as he was out. lunch came around and no call. i call to check up on wyatt and my bf said he was doing better and was playing with Kate. but i was still worried. i called the vet again and they said he was out to luch and they would have him call me back. 3:00 off work still no call. so on my way home i call again and they said he is off working with cattle and they would have him call me back. ( the first time i called i told them that it was urgent and my dane puppy had a very high fever.) i pull in the drive very frustrated. when i open the door. i find my boyfriend sitting over Wyatt's lifeless body attempting CPR, and balling. i rush over there and my beloved Wyatt was stiff. I tell my bf that he is goon. he said they where taking a nap together and Wyatt suddenly started coughing really hared. my bf tried to help him up but Wyatt collapse in his arms and just died, he said he had been doing CPR for at least 15 min. he just couldn't believe he was dead.i new then Wyatt had only held on that long to see my bf one more time. i never found out what was really wrong with my baby boy, as we buried him a few hours latter, in my bfs moms horse pasture. i went in the next morning to make sure my little rat terrier didn't have the same thing as she was coughing as well but had no fever. the vet said maybe i had given him to much aspirin by accident,i told him the dosage i gave him and he said that was the right amount, but that maybe i had accidentally given him more. or maybe he just had a week immune system. and he asked me " if his fever was so bad why didn't you call me" i got the antibiotics for my rat terrier and left(Kate my rat terrier was just fine). i have never been back there. i am now a vet asst. Wyatt inspired me to want to work with animals (i was in school to be a surgical tech for people before he came along). his life was to short but it was a wonderful one, and he brought more joy to my life than any animal in this world. my bf and i broke up almost exactly a year after he died. it was a mutual brake up and as we were talking about the end it some how became apparent that things had not been the same scene Wyatt had gone. like a part of "us" had goon with him. never in my life did i expect one dog to have so much impact on my life. i love you Wyatt, and we will meet again someday at rainbow bridge.
