Arrival Story:
Du Bear was the beloved dog of a man who passed on unexpectedly. The wife was not, shall we say skilled,, interested or patient with this dear soul who had been pretty neglected during those last months. I was asked to foster "Chewie" who's lack of disapline had been a challenge for other fosters. When he came to me, I could not figure out why he was called Chewie, when he didn't chew anything but his food! I changed his name to Duwie, I DID see that he had gotten used to getting his own way by being persistant AND stubborn! I also saw that he was quick to become afraid when people had raised energy...when there was human fighting going on. Dewie has a natural willingness to protect, and I believe that translated to impatience by whatever human cared for him before he came to us possibly including physical abuse. I saw almost immediately that if I was upset, frustrated, angry or sad, he would become anxious and defensive immediately - a perfect mirror of what was really going on inside of me, no matter how well I was fooling other humans. The moment I would take a breath and just let that energy calm down, he would calm down like turning off a light bulb! Then the only thing I had to do was to not only keep my home peaceful, but be consistent with my "rule, boundaries, and limitations" as Cesar Millan would say. What a good dog he has become, playing happily with his fellow fosters, although he is just as content to be left on his own. The vet says this older guy is in outstanding healthy condition. In fact we just had a beagle puppy stay here before being rehomed. Duwie adopted him and exercised him in the yard (video coming) running round and round the yard on those short legs with the 87 month old puppy unable to catch him! Now Duwie has turned into a "Du-bear" with cuddles a specialty and loving to get scratches and belly rubs ("Du-me here, Du-me there, Du me, du-me everywhere!" has become his favorite mantra! Dewie would make a wonderful companion for someone with a quiet lifestyle, he loves to walk and explore...or sit quietly and watch TV. While he is so OVER dat "Dog Whisperer" guy, Du Bear really will do best in a home where consistency, consistent rules, and calm rules the day.
