Lieby loved my Mother, who was her guardian; and she loved our Airedale, Annie, who she bonded with as if they were sisters.
She disliked mail carriers, but her real pet peeve was the hot air balloons which regularly float low over my Mom's house in summer. Lieby was afraid of men. The only male she liked was my husband, who was her "papa."
Lieby wasn't much interested in toys. She had a squeaky candy cane that Mom gave her for her first Christmas but she never chewed or played with it, although she did carry it around at times.
Leiby was just happy to be fed -- anything would do. She did enjoy a Liva-Snap now and then.
Her favorite walk was whereever Annie went.
She would crouch with a devilish look on her face -- butt up in the air, tail wagging -- and challenge her family (people and dogs) to run with her. She especially enjoyed climbing to the top of a hill and running back down.
My Mom, who is partial to German Shepards, got Lieby from a friend who rescued the year old dog from a very abusive situation.
Lieby dearly loved her feline brother, Shaughnessy, a Maine Coon Cat. They were very close and used to sleep together. Lieby used to come to our house every weekend for playdates with our dogs. She also stayed with us when my Mom went away, which was quite frequently. Lieby and Annie became best friends -- and when Lieby was here, they were never more than a few steps away from each other. If they hadn't been two completely different breeds, you would have thought that they were litter mates. Leiby was a very healthy dog until a few years ago, when she lost control of her hind end, due to a disease that the vet said was the canine equivalent of Multiple Sclerosis. The poor girl was obviously suffering, but there was nothing the vet could do; so, sorrowfully, Mom sent Lieby to Rainbow Bridge. She lives there now with Annie, and awaits the day that Mom will meet her there.
****Addendum**** My mother passed away May 15, 2005. She and Liebchen were joyfully reunited at Rainbow Bridge. Together, they crossed over and entered Heaven.
Mama and me -- together forever!

A few weeks ago I was running in the beautiful hills at Rainbow Bridge with Annie, Joshua, Jesse, Sadie, Casey and all my dear pup pals. Something was different, but at first, I wasn't sure what it was. Suddenly, I saw someone -- a human -- walking right towards me! This had never happened before, so I put my nose in the air to smell the wind. As the person got closer, I just stared and stared, and my heart began to beat fast...
And then I knew. It was my Mama! She was here! She had come to take me to heaven with her! I was beside myself with joy; barking, running around her, jumping into her arms, kissing her! Mama was laughing ... and crying. She saw Annie, Joshua, Jesse, Sadie and Casey and she hugged and kissed them, too; after all, she is their Grandma! Suddenly, I realized they could not go with us, but must wait for Mama's children to come for them. I knew I would miss them. Annie is as close to me as a sister! I kissed her face and told her I loved her. I kissed Joshua, Jesse, Sadie and Casey too. And Mama promised them they would see us soon in Heaven.
As Mama and I neared the Bridge, our loved ones followed at a distance. Mama waved good-bye to them one last time, and then she and I turned and crossed Rainbow Bridge together. Forever.
