Arrival Story:
One cold Friday afternoon in February of 2009, I went to a pet store to buy a fish for my husband's birthday. The clerk was busy, so I went to look at the puppies. There were six tiny puppies in the store. Five of the six were running up and down, barking, and trying to get attention. In the last cage was a tiny tri-colored ball of fur curled into a ball, sleeping. I said hello and she woke up and stared at me. Then, stood up, yawned, I put her paw out to touch me. The next morning I brought my husband back to the store. He thought she was "funny looking". Today, he can't imagine our lives without her.

Claire McAvoy and Coco Chanel are a registered therapy dog and reading partner team based in Marshfield, MA. We are trained and certified by Dog B.O.N.E.S (Dogs Building Opportunities for Nurturing and Emotional Support). We visit hospitals, schools, and rehabilitation centers. Our goal is to bring a little fun into people’s lives. Coco’s visits provide companionship, comfort, and unconditional love to patients as they recuperate. Studies has shown that therapy dog visits help patients decrease loneliness, lowers blood pressure, and help motivate speech and movement therapy. We visit the NNICU unit at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Derby Academy in Hingham, the Marshfield Senior Center, the Jewish Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Plain, and the Evans Park Assisted Living in Newton. We are available to meet students, teachers, seniors and anyone interested in meeting a therapy dog team. And, discuss the work that we do. Our Reading Partners Certification qualifies us to read to children at schools and libraries. The goal is to help improve the literacy skills of children, reduce self-consciousness, and enhance self-esteem. Recently, we participated at a forum at the New England School of Law discussing therapy animals, MA House Bill 1499 (which allow judges to include animals in restraining orders in cases of domestic abuse), and the legal standards and regulations that govern therapy work. Coco has been featured in the Boston Globe and the Marshfield Mariner. Claire is the author of Coco An Adoption Story, Coco Goes to The Beach, and Coco’s Lessons on Life, Love, and Happiness.
