Arrival Story:
Right before Christmas 2009 our 15 year old APBT x Boxer boy Ponch started to take a turn for the worse. He was getting weak in the legs, and losing control of his bladder. February 26 we sent him home over the rainbow bridge. Meanwhile, on December 24th 2009, a litter of three APBT x Lab puppies were born. They were surrendered to a shelter, taken home and then surrendered again. On February 26th, they became available for adoption. We found them two weeks later and they became our newest additions. Just might have been fate! ;)

Bio:
Dante's owners dropped his mom off to a friends to watch over Christmas. Dante was born Christmas eve and the friend surrendered the dogs to the shelter, not being told mom was pregnant. The shelter soon contacted the owner of the mother and he picked up mom and the pups. He soon surrendered the pups, and Dante came with a broken, wrapped up leg and a neck full of scar tissue. The shelter was told that mom jumped on his leg and it broke. What actually happened according the the vet that later amputated the leg is that Dante was attacked by an adult dog and the nerve in his leg was severed and it looked as though he also had to have surgery on his neck. The leg was rotting and completely dead by the time the puppies were brought back to the shelter. Dante stole our hearts, along with his sister!

Hello, Dante here!

On Christmas Eve 2009, three beautiful puppies were born. Our mother had been dropped off at a human friend's house to be watched over Christmas. When mom gave birth to us, the friend took us to the shelter, she did not know mom was pregnant. The shelter contacted mom's owner and he picked all of us up. Shortly after, he brought us all back. I had a broken and rotting leg. They told the shelter that my mom had jumped on me and broke my leg, and that the vet had wrapped it too tightly. The shelter vet is pretty sure I was attacked. My neck is full of scar tissue, I had scars on my face and body, and the nerve in my leg had been severed. I was in pain. Soon the wonderful shelter and vet sent me for sugery at 8 weeks old and I had my leg amputated. While this relieved my pain and made me happy again, it drastically dropped my chances at finding a forever home. Days passed, people walked by. Many people submitted applications for my sisters, one even went to her furever home. Then it was just Mina and I. Many people wanted Mina, no one wanted me. I was sad and heartbroken - I'm a good boy, and I'd love anyone who took me home more than they'd ever know. Many people submitted applications for Mina, but they were denied. I was glad, I didn't want to be all alone. The shelter said no one at all had asked about me, not even one person. Then one day, a man and a woman came in. They looked at us, and kept walking. Another one, I thought. But, they came back! My little tail had never wagged so fast. I went straight to them, I had to convince them I would love them as much as any dog with four legs, and that I was not a 'broken' dog or imperfect. After loving on them and snuggling, they left again. I thought for sure I would never see them again. But then they came back AGAIN! They seemed very excited. They spent some time with us and snuggled us. Then they left, only to come back the very next day with another dog! Oh boy, she looked like she'd be fun to play with! Then the animal control officer put me into his truck, and Mina too and took us to the vets. We got surgery in the morning - and who should come to pick us up, but the man and the woman from the shelter! This was the beginning of the rest of our lives!

Adoption to me means:

Lazy afternoon naps in the sun
2 square meals a day (Mom says this is my favorite part!)
A warm bed at night
Lots of love from my humans and my sisters
Walks every day - I love walks!
Treats and toys galore!
Room to run and grow.
Lots of doggy friends to play with
A big back yard - I LOOOVE my backyard!
Regular veterinary care - mom says this is important, although I could do without!
Bubbles! I love my peach flavoured bubbles!
Car rides
Kitties to play with - the love is not mutual yet with this one!
But most of all, adoption for me -
means LIFE!

-A note from Dante's mom

We went to the shelter after looking at probably 100 dogs/puppies trying to find the *one* for us. We were just looking and hadn't really decided we would be getting another dog so soon, being that our big boy had just passed fairly recently. We'd seen many cute pups and dogs, all with very bright potential, but none that were just for us. We saw these guys and I instantly fell in love. We went home and couldn't wait to rush back to fill out an application - we even had puppy dreams that night! Dante is such a love and he wants nothing more in life than to have a good snuggle. It breaks my heart to think that he may have missed out on showing the world what a wonderful boy he is, because of his leg. He had three strikes against him being a black pitbull mix who is apparently disabled, and will likely need medical attention later in life. If you ask me, he's perfectly able! He runs and plays just as well as the other dogs, and he can get into just as much trouble! In fact, after watching him I almost think 4 legs are too many - he's pretty crafty and flexible without that other leg in his way!

No more accidents!

I'd hate to jinx myself, but yesterday was the very first day I asked to go out side and the very first day I had NO accidents since coming home three weeks ago! Go me!!

My sister, Mina, has been asking to go out for a while and hasn't had an accident in AGES so mom and dad were waiting patiently for me to get a clue and ask too!

Mina always makes herself look smarter than me, but Mom knows the truth! I learned to sit at the door when I come in almost immediately. Mina knows the rules, but she doesn't follow them very well!

I am SO excited - today we are going for our very first visit to someone else's house. I hear they have two dogs and three KIDS! The vet said I LOOOOVE kids and have since I was a pup. His daughter and I fell so much in love that she begged her dad to take me home, but they couldn't. They apparently already have a zoo full of animals.

Right now I am laying in the sun, getting some much needed sleep before I go for my play date. Mom also said that they are having a turkey dinner tonight. I don't know what that is, but I LOVE food, so I hope they will share! They never seem to share their food with us, it's not fair. Dad did accidentally drop a piece of bread with a bit of peanut butter on it - I really liked that. I hope they start dropping food all the time!

I can barely tell I have three legs now. I run and run and run and jump like nothing else. Mom and dad always tell me how proud of me they are and how much I surprise them. I still get a little tired quicker than the other dogs, but I am getting much better. I can do more than just sit and watch them play now - I am really good at playing!

Happy easter, hope you all find some turkey somewhere!

Dante.
