Leave a bone for Pinky *In Loving Memory*

Pet-Peeves: Strangers entering the home, strange dogs.

Favorite Toy: Nylabone, Kong

Favorite Food: He loved to eat everything in sight!

Arrival Story: Pinky had been wandering our neighborhood for several weeks. I had seen him many times and tried to get him to climb into my car, but he would always run away. One day, I was walking my two dogs, and he came right up to us. A neighbor gave me an extra leash, and we all walked home. We kept him for the 10-day stray period, but no one claimed him. It was obvious he had been abused. He was terrified of men, would not go near the bathroom or a closet door, and had scars on his body. He was painfully thin and just longing for attention, love and security.

Bio: After several months with us, Pinky started showing his true colors. He bit someone on the hand as they entered our home (it was a family member that he knew and loved). She begged me not to put him down, so I looked into alternatives. We consulted a behaviorist, took many training classes, fed special food, herbal supplements, you name it. Then, he bit again! The harsh reality of aggression slapped us in the face. You have no idea what it's like until you witness it yourself. You feel helpless, and want so much to "fix" the problem, you'll try anything. The sad reality is that agression cannot be "fixed" no matter what you try. The dog and his family are prisoners in their own home. The dog can't be taken anywhere, no one can come into the home, and you hold your breath with dread, wondering what will happen "next time" the door is left open, he gets out of the yard, etc. Our hearts were broken for him, but we had to do the responsible thing. He was euthanized in February of 2001. We provided him with warmth and comfort for over two years...something he had probably never had before. He was never able to relax. He was always jumping at the slightest sound, ready to protect us and our home. When the fateful day came, he was finally able to sleep...he had done his job and had no more work to do.
