"Howdy everyone; my name is Herbie. I'm a twelve pound bundle of exuberance who needs a forever home. Right now I'm living with my foster mom who takes real good care of me but she has a lot of dogs of her own (and a cat who thinks she's a dog) so it's pretty crowded here, if you get my drift!
Mom has been working on my basic commands and I'm pretty good at 'sit' but she says I still need more work. See, what happened to me was my first humans decided they didn't want me anymore and they pushed me out of their car while driving on a busy highway in Camden.
If you think the other drivers were shocked you should have been in my head! It scared me to no end. That's why it's not easy for me to trust people. I mean, I want to but I'm not going to just take your word for anything – I'm taking a 'wait and see' approach. Mom says I suffered emotional trauma from that experience. So, please just understand it will take me a while to believe and trust what you say and do.
After the mean people made me get out of their moving car, I was rescued by two nice people who put their own lives at risk to get me off the road. Their vet checked me out and said I was okay, then I ended up in a shelter. I did not like it at the shelter!
My foster mom has taken care of me for a couple of months now and I trust her. I love to snuggle on her lap and roll over for belly rubs but when someone rings the doorbell and tries to come inside – I'm afraid it may be those other humans who hurt me and I bark like the devil! I may be a squirt of a dog but my bark is loud and boisterous (I'm rather proud of that accomplishment) but mom says it may be a problem… unless you are looking for a pint-sized guard dog!
One thing I don't like at all is someone getting too close to my neck – like when you put on my leash. Now, don't get me wrong – I absolutely love going for walks. It's just that I still can't trust any sudden or quick movements near my neck. I'm still afraid someone is going to hurt me again. If you are real patient with me I know I'll get better with this issue but it will take me quite some time to totally let my guard down on this one!
Anyway, here I am waiting for my new home. Are you in the market for a new canine family member? I'm young, healthy and my attitude is all puppy!
How about if you check out my online profile? See the photo of me standing? I do that a lot! I even turn around like I'm dancing. Aren't I the cutest?" Complete an applicatipon for herbie at: http://www.bcaaofnj.org/adoption_app.php
