Arrival Story:
We found Cosmo through a rescue shelter listing on Petfinder.com. Although our two previous Shelties are still with us in spirit -- they died last fall -- we felt ready to let some new love into our lives. Plus, we really missed having someone to stand guard over us as we try to leave the house or prepare dinner.

Bio:
Cosmo is four years old. We think the shelter we adopted from took him as a transfer from a local Humane Society. We do know that he became a rescue after living in a house with 13 cats and one other dog. He is very shy around new people. His first reaction when he greeted us in the shelter was to turn and RUN back into the kennel. He was brought back, and we were handed a leash and told, "Just go walk him." We took about a ten minute walk up a country road. He was sniffing at us and following us with his eyes by the time we returned.

My Life As Top Dog by Cosmo the Dog

Hi! Now that I've settled into my new home over the past two months, I'm ready to share my adventures with the world . . .

The trip home to the New Hampshire Seacoast from Vermont was an adventure all its own. During the 2 and 1/2 hour trip, I washed the driver human's face several times, helped to drive by putting the car in neutral for them, and otherwise kept the humans amused. I've established my place at the foot of the bed, although I also tend to take up one-half at the top if I think I can get it.

I played shy at first, to the point where the humans were very excited because they "taught" me to play fetch. Heh heh, soon I had them tossing toys all over the house for an hour at a time.

Although I've maintained my excellent leash manners in most situations, I am a Sheltie . . . and I protect my entire neighborhood by making sure no human passes by without getting barked at.

Seriously, though, life is so much better as the only animal, after having lived with 13 cats and moving to two different shelters in one month.

I have had two visits to my new vet, met my extended family and his human, and played in the dog park a few times. I'm now in training to teach the humans to click-and-treat on cue. For some reason they do this more often when I finish sounding the alarm -- excuse me, sorry about that, someone passed by the window -- as I was saying, for some reason the humans seem intent on interrupting my very useful barking.

When will they ever learn?
