Arrival Story:
Pete lived with another German Shorthair named Karen (I know, funny names). Their owner was a retired fisherman in Gloucester, MA. He died suddenly, and the man had no family in the local area. His sister from NJ called rescue to let us know her brother's dogs were alone in his home. Both were taken into foster care. I was a new rescue volunteer at the time, and they asked if I'd like to foster the old guy. He was the biggest GSP I had ever seen (he weighs in at 90 pounds). He was only supposed to stay for a short while, until he found a home. Little did we know he was already home with us. When he became ill a few months later, we thought we were going to lose him. He was hospitalized for three days. We realized then that there was a huge hole in our home without him and if he ever made it back from the hospital, he was here to stay. That was four years ago. He's not going anywhere!

Bio:
Pete paved the way for my involvement in GSP Rescue. When I lived in Massachusetts, I ran GSP Rescue of New England, an all-volunteer group. I had the pleasure of sharing a common goal with a wonderful group of volunteers. We re-homed about 70 German Shorthairs each year. "Rescue" does not neccesarily mean that the dog has been abused or neglected. A majority of them are well adjusted family pets who can no longer stay in their homes. Most of them have been displaced by no fault of their own. Families have children and don't have time, they retire and want to travel, they are divorcing or are moving and will not/cannot take their dog along. Of course there are some who land in shelters as strays or were simply dumped there because their owner no longer wanted them. Regardless of their origins, we work to place each and every one of them into loving, committed homes. Please visit www.gsprescue.org to find a rescue volunteer in your area. If you live in New England, visit gsprescue-ma.petfinder.org to view their current list of available dogs. I have relocated "home" to West Virginia. The folks in New England are still doing quite a job placing GSPs into loving homes. Now that I have moved away, I have been asked to be the national volunteer coordinator for GSP Rescue. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please e-mail me!! gsprescue@charter.net If you live in the Mid-Atlantic states, and want to adopt a GSP, look up Mid-Atlantic GSP Rescue here: http://www.mdgsprescue.org!!!
