Barry – Oct. 10, 1997 – Feb. 08, 2005 = 7 years, 3 months, 29 days
Barry was the first-born „legal“ son of Teddy and out of the first litter bred by the former breeding-alliance Cavis Leonis (Poland).
Unfortunately my former breeding partner didn’t take utmost care of the puppies and dam; Barry joined the family in Dec. 1997 and from the very beginning he had intestinal problems; e.g. a very long tape-worm of about 50 cm was one of the first surprises he gave us together with a tendency to diarrhoes.
Despite the fact that his immune system was never as strong as in all my other leos, he became a strong puppy and strong youngster (no joint- or tendon problems, no lameness) but a lot of support and reassureness from my side was necessary to make him finally a more selfconfident boy.
He had a certain “power” to deal with his not so strong developed immune system and from exterieur he was a really huge boy (80 cm at whithers, 78 kg); good veterinary care, the holistic care and well-balanced nutrition and supplements and his “will-to-survive” gave the impression of a really strong leonberger.
Feb. 07, 2005 – a walk with the TRIO and Barry played a lot with Angie, he was active, cheerful – everything seemed to be alright.
Morning of Feb. 08, 2005 – all a bit tired (nobody is an “early bird” in this household) and Barry refused to eat his meal; very unusual for him as he was rather fond of food and always the first one to tell me “hey mom, it’s time for breakfast”.
I`ve put all leos in the car to drive to a park, walked first Angie (to do some puppy-training) and next would have been Barry – but Barry didn`t want to get up and out of the car. I drove home, rung the vet up for an appointment, put Angie and Teddy in the house (neighbour has a key to look after them), rung up my husband to tell him that “something is wrong with Barry” and left for the vet. (at about 2 pm)
At vet`s ordinance (3 pm)– usually Barry walks in with waving tail as “vet’s are friends” for all my leos – this time he did NOT GET UP ALONE and the assistant had to help me to put him on his feet. Blood was taken for test – haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration were about 1/3 of normal range. Vet rung up at the animal hospital (the one were I’ve done my practices) and announced us as “maybe an emergency op case” – diagnosis was “most likely a ruptured spleen and blood in abdominal region – which finally leads to a hypovolemic shock (with low blood pressure and low blood flow); Barry was already in the first stage of this.
Traffic jam as usual – it took me ONE HOUR to go to the animal hospital (arrived there at 5 pm). We did ultrasound of abdomen and ascites (fluid in abdomen) was seen; the vet did a punctuation and got blood. He supposed it could be a tumor of spleen which ruptured – we did X-ray of lung and heart (to check for metastasis – as I’ve learned from my experiences with Angie in July 2004 that it makes NO SENSE to prolong life if there are metastases).
Lung and heart had been ok, heart normal in size – and so we decided for emergency op. (6.15 pm).
As nobody can say how long this will take I decided to drive home to look after Teddy and Angie; my husband was already home (as I gave him another phone call from animal hospital that we have an emergency case with Barry); I arrived at 6.50 pm.
Vet from animal hospital rung up at 7.10 pm and told us
“it is even worse than we thought, spleen I could remove but it is the LIVER – at both hepatic lobes there are nodules (cancer) and several of them ruptured and all the blood flew into the abdomen – even if the hepatic lobes are partly removed, the chances are only about 25%”.
This condition leads to bleed to death – if the reason is not found and bleeding can`t be stopped (if it would have happened in the night I would have found a DEAD Barry in the morning).
There was ONLY ONE decision I could made – to let him go !
I told the vet that I would like to say him Good bye and we (Joachim and I) went again to animal hospital, arrived there at 7.50 pm. Barry was still somewhat narcotisized but he could hear me talking to him – I had 10 minutes, I told him that I love him, that he was a good boy and that I’ll miss him terribly but have to let him go to a better place !
Barry died at 8.15 p.m. in my arms ! His body was picked up by crematory-staff on Feb. 09, 2005 and in 1 week I will get his ash back.
Teddy was searching, even went into the lower bath room (which was usually Barry`s place, Teddy didn`t really like to go there) and into my office, he searched in the garden – and understood that Barry is gone.
Angie is still searching as she was used to walk with Barry and to play with Barry outdoors (indoors she prefers to play with Teddy and Micky) and has a mild shock as she does not understand where uncle Barry went and why he doesn`t come back to play with her.
I will not tell how I feel – as you ALL SURELY UNDERSTAND – you all have already been in that situation – BUT from July 2004 to Feb. 2005 LOOSING THREE beloved pets, this is far too much !!!
I really don’t know how to deal with this and I’ll surely need my time to recover from that shock.
Feb. 09, 2005 is still a day with “bitter-sweet” memories; Feb. 09, 1994 my first beloved leonberger (Teddy sen. aka Emil v. Müssenberg) left for good; he passed away whilst sleeping and today I understand that this is an act of Mercy – to the one who has to leave as well to those left behind.
Feb. 11, 2005 – Edith, Teddy, Angie & the cats
