   Leave a bone for Darwin

Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

Likes:
Darwin likes spending time with me by either following me about the house or sleeping nearby. He's also my helper in the kitchen, letting me know when things are smelling drool-licous!

Pet-Peeves:
Fleas?... That was until we got frontline. (smiles) Laying down on the floor only to have to get up so he can monitor where I am in the house to lay down there too.

Favorite Toy:
Darwin doesn't really like toys that much, though he does like rawhides bones.

Favorite Food:
Peanut butter smeared on a plain milkbone; Pro Plan dog food; and sometimes the occasional dare I say... dropped on accident table scrap!

Favorite Walk:
He likes helping "Zip" our border collie with squirrel patrol in the backyard. It's a huge backyard so it does take awhile to walk all the way around it. I think Darwin prefers rides in the car verses walks.

Best Tricks:
Tricks?... Darwin has the pitiful look down to a science! He can simply look at someone with those puppy-dawg eyes and a slight shiver, winning him treats from sales clerks at any petstore or recieptionist at the vet's office.

Arrival Story:
My malamute had died leaving me and my border collie "Zip" feeling very sad and lonely. I found the weeks afterwards hard as I had had "Roni" for so long. I kept buying treats in twos instead of just one. I had always wanted a great dane, and decided to fill that void in my heart by finding my next bestfriend. I work as an animal control officer and pickup alot of dogs, but I was looking for that one dog that I could connect with. (that special one that you can't stop thinking about) I visited quite a few great danes from petfinder, but I either didn't like the dog, or the dog didn't like me. I finally saw Darwin on petfinder. His name was 'Deaux' on his posting and he was in aransas animal control's facuility. I must have looked at that posting for three days straight before deciding a road-trip was in order. I'm the world's worst at trying to drive without getting lost, but did make it to Rockport finally. The officers at the animal control told me that Darwin had been abandoned in the countryside, and that they had had him for 6 days. No one was looking for him. In that time with actual "FOOD" they had put a little bit of weight on him. The picture is of when they first aquired him. He weighed 96lbs. I had a heartworm test done, and Darwin was high antigin positive. He just looked at me while we did the test with the saddest expression ever put on a dog's face... Then he leaned against me for some petting and I could have cared less if he had turned out high antigin.. I still would have taken him. I knew he was my dog then. I gladly filled out paperwork. Darwin did have a tick problem, the officers helped me pick off ticks while we did the paperwork for the adoption. I also noticed a few sores and one major cut to his hip. He was still extreamely thin, with backbone, ribs and hipbones showing. I walked Darwin around a little before our trip back home for a potty break; never once did he try to drag me anywhere. The trip home was a long one... I got lost again. Darwin stretched out across the back seat with his head propped up on the back of the seat watching the cars lazily as we drove. As soon as we reached Rosenberg we had a much needed potty break! (5hrs. driving will do that) We then went straight to petsmart, since it was new year's eve they were closing early.. only letting people in to pickup their pets from the grooming shop. I really needed to get Darwin some quality (put that weight on) food. I explained to the sales man that was at the door about "I just got him, and really need to get a bag of dogfood.. just one bag please".. this is where Darwin sat down beside me and looked up doing his best pitiful look... complete with shiver too! He let us in. We were quick too! No side trips down the lanes to look for anything other than what we needed most! Once we got the dogfood, we went home. Zip didn't know what to think. She was more intrested in keeping all her toys away from Darwin than socializing. It didn't take more than an hour before Darwin won Zip over. Darwin had an accident or two due to not being able to hold it - as he had diarreah that first weekend at home. It was also a shock to Darwin that night having a bath, evidently he'd not had many baths.. and the wet dane wrestling did commence in the bathtub!! Afterwards... throwing water through the house and rolling/rubbing about.. he fell asleep beside my chair as I checked email. Darwin was finally home.

Bio:
I took Darwin to see Doctor Hester at Rosenberg Vet Clinic soon after I had brought Darwin home. When Darwin was neutered, I also had his teeth cleaned. When I went to pick up my guy, the tech 'Ross' showed me what he found while cleaning Darwin's teeth... Darwin had been shot with buckshot. One of the wounds I saw when I first saw Darwin was on his ear, it was torn and shredded looking; that was because he had been shot and the pellets caught his ear and neck. Ross had removed as much as he could find, but said there might be a few left that were too deep to remove. It was quite a shock, and can only imagine what Darwin must have gone through before being picked up by animal control. He's proved to be an excellent house dog, though it took him a week to discover that he wasn't going to be thrown outside. It's like he couldn't believe that he was allowed to sleep on the couch or on the bed. Darwin is definetly a great bestfriend.

It's Wabbit Season!

My family already had the cats when I came here... they seem sneaky but as long as they don't get in between me & my petting time I guess I won't have to step on them (snickers) But.. ahh.... cat food does hold my intrest.... That succulant smell.. I always hope that a kitty kibble will fall from the counter my way....
There's also a boa constrictor that comes out of the tank from time to time. I try to smell it but I'm not allowed to, so instead I just watch the strange moving rope as it's transfered here and there. I can't help but laugh when the snake gets fed though. That border collie "Zip" goes nuts since the boa is large enough to eat fresh road kill squirrels! Zip keeps thinking the squirrels are for her, and instead they are given to the snake.

Well, there's been a new development. My family has added a mini rex rabbit to the house. At first I thought hmm.... it's smaller than the cats... and moves too! The small creature isn't afraid of me - aren't these things made for dogs to chase??? Instead I find that when I go into the computer room, the rabbit jumps up to race towards the cage wire to greet me. I can't help but sniff back as our noses touch. I nearly fainted when I came in from the yard to find the cage empty one afternoon!! Where was my bunny?! My little sniffing pal?! I looked through the house frantically before going back to the empty cage again. I then looked to my humans to ask them with a demanding 'WOOF'.... "Where is the bunny?!' before going back through the house to look... coming back to the empty cage... Geeze...
Later that afternoon I find out that the bunny went to work & then to the vet to be checked out for sneezes.. I hope its not allergic to the cats..
Of course a few days later after supervising the changing of the rabbit cage litter I notice a new litter being put in. This one doesn't make my bunny sneeze. I know that technically it's not really MY bunny but since its cage is near my bed in that room..... I just know eventually I'll get to play with the bunny.... maybe for xmas? Ok.. I know that's not going to happen, so instead I'll just be content to mooch carrots through the wire from my pal.

A forever home.

Though I've been through alot, I finally have a new forever home at last!

I'll never have to sleep outside again..
Never have to eat scraps or dirt again...
Never have to run from shotguns again..
Never have anyone torment me or torture me again..

My humans make sure I have lots of places to sleep on the floor by giving me cushy pallets and beds. They also let me watch over them at night from the empty end of a kingsize bed! Of course, I do have to push them abit to snag a pillow or blanket.. the warmest ones are theirs.. I'll just have to work on that some more.

I also have a huge backyard to walk around in, though I prefer the inside of the house and usually just get that 'call of nature' done as quickly as possible to be able to come back inside. The strange border collie however.. her name is "Zip"... she insists on chasing squirrels!
Brrr.... too cold to be outside!

I've also gotten accustom to car rides. I really look forward to going to different places with my humans. We go to petstores to shop for that tasty food that seems to always be in my bowl.. and a treat now and then too! We also go see my doctor now and then. The silly human takes me is always happy after I get on the scale at the office. I actually think she likes seeing me gain weight! (Drools... thinking about peanut butter smeared milkbones..)

I have had a few nightmares though, my human says I started out with a little bit of barking.. then whining... then screaming..
It took her awhile to wake me up from that... but I'm glad she did.
I won't go into details about all the bad things I dreamt of, as I don't want anyone else having nightmares too.

Well, that's all for now.. life is great! Especially for great danes!
