Leave a bone for Grettel CCI Breeder Dog
Arrival Story:
Grettel is the fifth puppy we have raised for Canine Companions for Independence (www.cci.org) She was bred to be a service dog but turned out to have such wonderful traits that she has been selected by CCI to be part of their breeding program.
She now lives in California and will be bred with another CCI dog as soon as she comes into heat, which could be any time now (Dec, 2009).
We have requested to be able to raise one of her pups as soon as they become available.
Great news! The pups were born March 18th. We have been selected to raise one of them. He will arrive at our home May 12th. His name is Wycech & he's the first born of her first litter and he's the biggest.
She only had 3 pups survive. Three others were stillborn due to a problem called uterine inertia. This is something that can be avoided in the future with medication, so it will not prevent her from having future litters for CCI.
Grettel was a very attentive mother for her pups but recent reports are that she's ready for them to leave, which is a natural progression for a mother dog. Once those pups get their teeth the mother is not happy nursing them, as you can imagine. But the pups are eating solid food now & have made the adjustment very well.
All three of the pups will be coming to Virginia to be raised by CCI volunteers. We're very happy that we'll be able to see them grow & train together as they develop into wonderful service dogs. Keep your fingers crossed!

Bio:
Grettel was a delight to have in our home. She is smart, gentle and friendly with everyone she encounters.
When she went to advanced training with CCI she received consistently high marks throughout the training period. We were so happy when we received the call that she had been selected for the breeding program. This meant that she not only was good enough to be a service dog, but even better, a breeder, the highest qualification. What a thrill!
We can't wait to see her pups.
