Arrival Story:
Rocky was 10 months old when we found each other. He was with his 3rd owner by then and she was advertising him for sale in the local newspaper. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him bounding for the front door. Almost knocking me over in his enthusiasm he already was a BIG boy.
Considering he had been moved from 3 different owners in his formative years (for no fault of his own), he is the most delightful dog I've ever had. It took a lot of work at first. He had never been socialized with dogs or humans or had any training. He was eager to learn ... we went to obedience training - where his curiousity always distracted him from the lesson. He "passed"! We went for walks every day in the provincial park by our home where everything had to be closely inspected. He made new doggie friends and learned how to share his toys. Over the next 6 years he developed into a happy, well-adjusted (although he does have his 'quirks') companion. We've had lots of adventures together.
The adventure we're on now is a battle with cancer ... in the spring of 2008, at age 7 Rocky was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer ... given a good prognosis we went ahead with a simple chemo treatment (a pill I gave him at home) and after 3 months he was in remission! Yahooo!! He was back to his 'normal' self ... happy, lively, a spring in his step, a puppy again!
But, as cancer can be, it came back. This time we caught it early because we'd learned the signs so he's back on his chemo pill and our fingers are crossed.
He is my Rock and he just turned 9 ...
