Arrival Story:
Max was part of a recsue in northern CA. they had him for over a year and noone was interested in adopting him. then his foster mom could no longer care for him and they put out a post asking if someone could take him. i said i would and he was transported down to me in san diego. i fostered him for about a year and i did not get even one inquiry about him. so at that point i adopted him myself. he is an old boy with some medical issues but they dont seem to bother him too much. he had to have a full dental and several teeth removed so he likes soft treats but otherwise his mouth feels much better. he also has an autoimmune disorder that will never go away. lately hes slowed down alot and likes to spend most of the day sleeping or sunning himself if its nice outside. hes also recently started to become incontinent and so sometimes i call him my leaky boy. otherwise he still has alot of spunk left and he really enjoys keeping a look out for squirels in the backyard and going for walks

Its with a heavy heart that i write this. Maximus passed away friday, december 9, 2005. he had been a little more lethargic then normal for about a week and so i kept an eye on him. i hadnt noticed him eating so i started feeding him the wet food that he loves. he ate well but would end up throwing up late at night once in bed. after he did it twice i fasted him for a day, thinking he just got into something like he had done in the past. his drinking and peeing were normal. then, late at night he threw up water and i knew something was definitely wrong. i phoned the vet and left a message letting them know that id be bringing him in first thing in the morning. one test leading to another, it was finally determined that he had developed an aggressive form of diabetes and there was too much damage. a young healthy dog would barely have a chance, so i had to let max go.
he was 16yo so i guess it was his time. i shouldnt be too surprised and yet i am. he was doing SO well, the best i had ever seen him! he had oral surgery late august and all his bloodwork was normal. he had the rest of his teeth extracted other then the two bottom canines and he had two oro-nasal fistulas repaired. he was spunky and energetic and played with toys for the first time since ive known him. he was doing so well, that we went to an ophthalmologist specialist and sought out a new treatment for his dry eye.
i take consolation in knowing that his last few months were probably his best and that is how i will always remember him. he came into my life unwanted and unloved and he left it in my arms feeling warmth and kisses. in the end i think i gained the most from knowing him. he had some issues, but he was the best dog and i will always love him. i told him that zayn, pixie and spike were waiting for him and they would have a fun time playing again.
if anyone is actually reading this, please consider adopting an older dog. there are so many in animal control and rescues that go unadopted. im continually amazed at todays throw away society where so many families get rid of the older family pet and replace it with a new puppy.... well, thats my two cents
-run baby bear run, mommy loves and misses you. kissies max, goodnight-
