Arrival Story: One Saturday evening, october 3rd 2004,I received a call from our local SPCA, asking if I would mind fostering some pups. Of course I didn't, though I was in for a shock when the details followed-7 puppies, 2 days old, who were going to be drowned had been turned in. They would require a lot of care-bottle feeding, cleaning, help peeing and pooping...was i still game? I was.
Along them came-3 beige girls, 3 black boys and a little brown boy. And then began one of the most enjoyable, most rewarding situation of my life.
For the first 3 days I did everything for the puppies. They ate every 2 hours around the clock, they needed to be cleaned afterwards, stimulated to pee and poop. By the time I had fed and cared for all 7 of them it was almost time to start over. By the 4th day my 2 year old husky/Border Collie Hope began to show an interest. She had always been a mother hen but had been spayed only 2 days before the pups arrived. Well, she decided after their evening feeding on their 4th day with us that it was timef for her to take over, and take over she did! She adopted the pups as her own, even with the stiches from her spay still in place. And even more amazing, she began to lactate-not enough to sustain the pups but enough to comfort them a lot, nad give them more of a will to fight! Day by day the pups grew, and it wasn't long before I decided that for my sake and Hopie's, I wanted to keep a puppy. I didn't decide on Emma until she was almost 6 weeks, but once I made the choice there was no turning back! Emma is now 14 weeks, and her brothers and sisters have just all been adopted. So we are just beginning our journey together without her siblings. She is the sweetest pup, so quiet, so well behaved, and so quick to learn. She is a joy to have, and I am anticipating enjoying bringing her up, and watch her blossom into a winderful dog!
